Who intherited his daddy's talent? He is a super accurate puncher, but unlike his daddy I think he's a natural counterpuncher. I don't think he's wired to be aggressive. He looks pretty quick and powerful, and for a guy that had a truncated amateur backround he seems to be well ahead of his years. His downside: He's 5-8 1/2 and a JMWT. Looks too ripped to go to 147. It's a hard road for a guy like this, as at 23, he's probably a MDLWT by 26-27. I think he has a chance to win a belt though. Pro Debut: This content is protected
It's important to keep things in perspective with Junior Tszyu. His dad had 270 amateur fights & was the world amateur champion. Tim the Toolman had 30-odd amateur fights, most of them (perhaps all of them) in Australia. In saying that, he does have talent and quite a few of dad's qualities. He's very calm and purposeful in the ring, hits hard with the right hand, and is physically strong. If you were a fan of his dad (as I was), it's kind of a buzz watching Junior Tszyu fight. Because he doesn't have that extensive international amateur background (that everyone really needs to go somewhere), he's going to have to learn on the job as a professional & do it the old-fashioned way. Listening to him interviewed in the ring last night, it sounds like the plan is to take him all over Australia to fight as they steadily build up his quality of opposition. I think that's a good plan. As we saw last night, his presence on an undercard really adds value to a local promotion. He's must watch if matched decently. The fight I'm looking forward to is Tim Tszyu v Dave Toussaint for the Australian middleweight title. Toussaint is the guy who beat Shane Mosley's son on the Horn v Pac undercard. He's a strong southpaw & unlike Tszyu's last couple of opponents, can punch. I don't think Tszyu is ready for a fight like that yet but he might be later in the year. Tszyu should campaign at middleweight, not junior middle. He looks more comfortable at that weight to me & it allows for a bit of growth. Good win last night. He's back in action next month in Sydney against TBA.
Yeah, with 30 amateur fights, he probably needs another 7 or 8 Austrailia, NZ level fights before stepping up. People make fun of JCC Jr., but it just tells you how tough boxing is; How many HOFers, or even world Champion's sons have gotten to his level. He fought well against legit world champs, Sergio Martinez, Andy Lee and them, he only thing he did wrong was not having Daddy's talent.
Half of his wins were setups or rehearsed fights. Guy can't fight for ****. He was a media creation from the get go.
there really isnt much talent in the australian amateur system sadly, its filled to the brim with come forward brawlers, some can be crafty but ultimately if you give them some defense and movement you can go INCREDIBLY FAR
We've certainly seen guys with minimal amateur backgrounds be developed into decent professionals while being matched principally with local talent (at least initially). Anthony Mundine is an example of that. Junior Tszyu had a much better amateur background than Mundine (who had virtually none). Middleweight is a division where you can make good progress while being fed a diet of locals & Kiwis. They just need to bring him along with the right fights & not put him in with too many punchers. I'll be interested to see who's next up.
I always felt Kostya was a counter puncher. He was boxing beautifully on the back foot against Hatton during the middle rounds
Cheeseburger Jr is a decent - maybe pretty good - fighter when he bothers. The problem is, he doesnt bother.
