After the defeat by Tyson, Williams became a journeyman heavyweight. His other notable fights include losses to Larry Holmes, Tim Witherspoon, Tommy Morrison, and Frank Bruno, and wins against Bert Cooper and Trevor Berbick.
McCall was awful v Bruno and Ortiz is far more skilled than McCall, plus Bruno never beat a decent southpaw.
Having scored four wins, Tillis challenged future two-time world champion Tim Witherspoon in September 1983, for the vacant North American Boxing Federation title. Tillis was shockingly bombed out in one round, apparently slipping on a wet spot in the ring as Witherspoon hit him. After the fight, Tillis' trainer Angelo Dundee left him and advised him to retire, as he had just suffered his third defeat in thirteen months. Tillis got a new team and put together four wins in 1984, before challenging Carl Williams in a world title eliminator. Having decked Williams twice in the opening round, Tillis tired and was outpointed. In 1985, under the guidance of trainer Drew Bundini Brown, he fought Joe Frazier's son and top contender Marvis Frazier. In a recurring theme, he had Frazier down in the second round, but again ran out of gas and was outpointed. A few months later, he traveled to South Africa to fight hard-hitting ex-champ Gerrie Coetzee. Tillis lost a unanimous decision, but sent Coetzee to hospital with stitches and missing teeth.
Bruno never beat a top fighter while they were in their 20`s and he never beat a top unbeaten fighter either, Ortiz was unbeaten when Wilder met him the first time.
Gerrie was coming off a win off of Tillis and was still a damn good fighter. The Barkley stuff came 11 years later off a “comeback”. Cmon.
Being “unbeaten” today means nothing. Actually to me it’s a detriment and proof you’ve Most likely met nobody in your career. As most big names today have done. First man of note wilder met whooped his ass and embarrassed him.
They’re not in the same ball park. Bruno was a modern sized Hw don’t know where you get that idea that I “hate” wilder for that. I dislike wilder for the waste of talent he is. He’s not good. Never seen a guy get so hyped for knocking out nobodies. If he ever knocks out anyone with talent let me know. Old slow Ortiz was made for him and he was still losing every round till he caught him.
Tillis had stamina problems at that point and was coming off a couple of losses.
