Say the Witherspoon that fought Holmes vs the Patterson that poleaxed Johannson. Who takes it? I think Patterson has a good chance, despite being smaller. For one, I rate Patterson as a harder puncher than Holmes. So he definitely had enough in his gloves to hurt Witherspoon. But I still give Tim a good chance at victory.

Tim is too defensively sound and slick for Patterson to get inside and work his magic well, not to mention just how strong Witherspoon was, too. He probably drops Floyd multiple times ahead of a unanimous decision. I consider Floyd to be on the lower tier when it comes to ATGs H2H, think how tight he was against Quarry and Ellis, and then imagine how Witherspoon would've been against them. I just think Terrible Tim is a combination of things that make Floyd have hard times.

I think Witherspoon would pose very similar stylistic and physical problem for Patterson to the ones that Sonny Liston did.

Floyd decision. Flame away but I have never thought all that highly of Witherspoon, at least not as highly as a lot of folks do.

Witherspoon may very well catch Patterson and stop him. But, if it goes to the cards, I look to Patterson's speed to win a decision. And, I would make Floyd a very slight favorite overall.

Tim is a bit too big and a bit too good.

Witherspoon wasn’t as good as Patterson.

You know what they say about opinions, but I just looked up two top 50
ATG heavyweight lists by boxing publications and Patterson was in the top 20 in one and the top 25 in another, and Witherspoon was in neither top 50.

Didn’t say he was as good sometimes being big enough and good enough is enough. “Greatness” doesn’t prevent you losing to those below your “stock” Ali lost to Norton, Tyson lost to Douglas, Patterson lost to Ingo.

Considering that they looked kinda similar too, Patterson might have PTSD going into the fight. Lol

People should share a link to this thread whenever people try making sense of what to think of Witherspoons career. Whatever he didn't acheive he acheived enough where the majority of people would gamble on him to beat Floyd Patterson.

I have to step in here, because lately guys have been posting that Holmes wasn't a good puncher. Wouldn't you agree that Holmes was a sharp puncher, a fast, effective and punishiing two-handed puncher? No, he didn't put guys to sleep but he hurt and stunned and knocked down and stopped a lot of guys in cruel fashion.
