Look at the level of that competition, though.

Over a period of about seven years he fought and beat all the best. Foreman retiring after the Jimmy Young encounter took some of the shine off his legacy through no fault of his. Had they fought and Holmes won, his critics wouldn't have much to say. Holmes didn't beat his opponents as much as he whipped them.

I think even, tho Tim wasn't known as a big puncher, he'd end up hurting Floyd and stopping him.

Tim would've been known for being a big puncher if he didn't have so much skill. He wobbled Smith multiple times during their first bout like Bruno couldn't.

He could definitely belt a bit. That's why I see him stopping Floyd.

Yeah Tim hit hard enough. He also had 83 inches of arm reach, good jab, powerful clubbing right hand, good defense, decent chin etc. I don’t see Floyd casually boxing his way to a decision here.

He didnt beat all the best & turning pro as late as he did makes him at least partly at fault for that fight not eventuating. Regarding what would happen had he defeated Foreman, well, I can’t give him points for what he might have done - but that is hardly something that would make his career immune to criticism.

Holmes turned pro in '73, he simply didn't get any serious fights until later in the decade due to working under Ali as his sparring partner. He didn't even fight any decent names til '75.

I think Roy Williams was the first decent guy he beat

Rodney Bobick was decent, Williams was a bit better.

Late to fight decent guys, but not late to debut in the pros.

Never said Floyd wouldn’t have to work for it …

I’d have to disagree looking at the averages, at least among prominent fighters. Foreman finished early & Holmes started late. These factors conspired to rob us of a match.

He wouldn’t get much work done at all.
