Witherspoon. Durable and big punch he should get Cooney out of there whom couldn’t defend himself when hurt. Witherspoon Ko round 7

Tim Witherspoon is more proven and I favor him. If we look at the fights Witherspoon Vs. Holmes and Cooney Vs. Holmes; that would be enough. Because it can be said that both of them were prime in those fights.

    Witherspoon.
I think his right hand finds Cooney's ,up in the air chin at some point. With the right tutelage Cooney could have really been something imo,but he was fed stiffs because the Whacko twins were just looking for a one fight, one deal cash out .

Witherspoon. More durable and skilled than Cooney.

I believe in the early 80's Cooney's camp hired Tim as a sparring partner. After badly bloodying Gerry's nose Tim was let go. Tim just posted here recently? Probably a question to ask....

Tim by TKO, late stoppage. Defensively responsible with a crazy overhand right vs. defensively irresponsible with a left he doesn't keep high enough.

Witherspoon's overhand right is a perfect weapon against the taller Cooney who is fairly easy to hit, I see a good fight until Witherspoon catches him at some point in the 2nd half of the fight with that big over hand right then its game over.

I love Cooney but Tim is all wrong for him . There’s a reason why Cooney’s camp fired Witherspoon after only a few sessions of sparring.

And probably did not consider Tim Witherspoon as an opponent on Gerry Cooney's rise to a title shot, Cooney's plans would have been severely derailed.

At that point it was moot. Cooney got his shot at Holmes in June of 1982 at which point Witherspoon was a 14 fight prospect and barely ranked if even at all. Not that Cooney ever WOULD fight Spoon but the fact that he wasn’t selected as a vehicle for getting to the title is irrelevant

You and I know why, it had nothing to do with Gerry Cooney's quality of opposition or his one dimensional skills. The guys that Cooney feasted on were stiffs.

Be that as it may, there was never a basis for a Witherspoon vs Cooney fight. When Witherspoon was a prospect coming up, Cooney was already in line to fight Holmes. After Cooney lost, Tim flourished but Gerry’s career was more or less over. To be clear, I don’t think coneys management would ever put him in the ring with Witherspoon unless There was a title and a 10 million dollar price tag on it. But to try and create this argument that Cooney tip toed around Witherspoon when he wasn’t even an obstacle at the time in question makes little sense
