I understand your point about the weight difference. Just pointing out he whooped a ‘fellow who could punch and box’ a fellow that happens to be a top 2 all time fighter at the weight. I know that doesn’t necessarily correlate to how a fight with Witherspoon go down, but it’s worth considering.

    A onetime glory.
A rematch glory that lasted 124 seconds. And another fight against the Livermore Comedian. You do the math.

Funny that. I think that’s about 10 seconds fewer than Witherspoon lasted in a rematch against Smith

Do we want this to become a shitty power comparison of 187lb Schmeling and 228lb Smith (even excluding flabby Tim at 233....) ?

b b b b but Primo. I am believer of any man from 124lbs can knock any man out even if they 400lbs, punch power is non linear

Its not just Schmeling, I also don´t like the 24/7 praising of a one night FOTC Frazier against all kinds of fighting styles. For example, we never had to argue like that for the fellow he beat that night.
Think it needs a little more than a single win (with a total rematch relativization) to "extrapolate" into much more.
I´m not even totally sure with Maxie against a tough, heavy and agressive Galento, but that might go too far ^^

For sure man, same reason I don’t like to view Zaire Foreman as this unbeatable monster, obviously I have hind sight on my side, but he’d fought what, 3 top 10 guys? Fair enough he beat the lineal champ and top contender in 4 rounds combined, but he was still young inexperienced and had a lot of flaws

I think Schmelling may struggle with Carnera, even though he’s a much better boxer, the size factor does make it a bit of a wildcard.

I was kind of just playing devils advocate, I’d probably make Witherspoon a slight favourite

Schmeling is often seen here as the type of cute boxer who couldn't overcome physical disadvantages. Nothing can be further from the truth - Max knew how to punch and he stopped many durable fighters.

I don't want people to vote for Schmeling here, Tim was excellent fighter as well. I want people to evaluate Schmeling properly, he wasn't unathletic one dimensional guy who scored a lucky KO against green Louis. Schmeling was legit fighter who could box in variety of ways. Not many fighters could compete against him at his size and he'd beat a lot of bigger ones as well.
