That Calzaghe's win over Lacy was overrated and really means nothing. I admit I was caught up in the hype at first but realized Lacy was nothing more than a product of clever marketing due to his catchy nickname "Left Hook" and his great physique. If you peel away the layers and look more closely you realize that Lacy is a limited and very flawed fighter who struggled with a C fighter in Manfredo and went life and death with a guy Dawson destroyed. So from this point on I never want to hear that the Lacy win was a great win because Lacy is barely a B- fighter at best and his track record has shown it. With that said this is not a thread to bash Joe thread. I'm a Calzaghe fan and he's and ATG at 168 his accomplishments can't be denied but this Lacy was a great career defining win stuff needs to stop immediately.
It appeared so at the time, but you are right, with each Jeff Lacy fight that result is looking less than great. Calzaghe's reputation will suffer badly if Kessler goes the same way as Lacy (nothing to say he will though - his body hasn't taken the damage that Lacy's has, and besides he just looks a much better boxer).
I tend to agree with you, but let me play devil's advocate for a second. Isn't it possible that Lacy was a top fighter, but that Calzaghe's destruction of him was so complete that he hasn't been the same fighter since?
No becasue Lacy fought the same way against Calzaghe as he does now. He just faced and elite in Joe and was exposed. Calzaghe didn't ruin Lacy he just wasn't that good to begin with.
The thing is, it was only ever career defining to Americans. For me its about the 5th or 6th best win on his resume.
still didn't "mean nothing". it shut up a lot of [american] doubters, and showed the aging great defeating a younger, stronger fighter who was supposed to plow through him.
"I'm a Calzaghe fan and he's and ATG at 168 his accomplishments can't be denied but this Lacy was a great career defining win stuff needs to stop immediately." Interesting point, and i totally agree that Lacy has not looked that great since (I think Calzaghe scared Kessler badly, and he's only beginning to get his confidence back - listen to kessler's iunterview after the fight - he was shaking his head in disbelief) .....but let's define career defining moment. was it not that fight that caught the attention of basically everyone on the North American side of the world? I'd say that is carreer defining at least in one sense.
we make a big deal about joe's own performance that night. he was focused like never before, switched on, scarily quick, throwing insane combos and in a nasty nasty sadistic mood. that was his best performance. in terms of the quality of opponent in front of him that night, kessler, eubank, reid, hopkins and brewer were all better than lacy.
even though lacy was over-rated calzaghe was still incredible that night showed the world what quality he is
Probably because of the copious amounts of bull**** endured in the buildup to the fight, due to over zealous American fight fans. It's only fair, if you are going to talk junk prior you have it rammed down your throat in my opinion.
Lacy wasn't a complete fighter when Joe got him but you have to lend credence to the notion of ruining him. Lacy surely isn't even the guy prior to the Calzaghe fight. The way he was beaten there is just no coming back from that.
I'll admit to picking against joe in that fight only because I'd never seen him fight and didn't really care for his resume, however, if I had there's no way in hell I would have picked Lacy to win.
