No he was not exposed as a over rated fighter, he was exposed as a limited fighter and who ever boxed him and used angles would have a clear advantage over him it was obvious in the sheika fight when you consider the two wars Sheika had with Pemberton leading up to that fight.
It's not necasarilly the pain of the beat down that i think would effect his pysche. It's the fact that no matter what Lacy done he couldn't get out of the way of Joe's shot's and he couldn't lay a meaningful shot on Joe. People have had worse beatings and i can imagine that having an effect on you, but, i think that the realisation that you just aren't good enough would be much worse. Of course i am just speculating as im not Jeff and i've never been twatted like he was.
That's if you rate Woodhall....Reid....Sheika All of them are extremely limited though as you mentioned tough as nails. You see it not entirely Joe fault he fought in an era that seriously had no elite fighters in his weight class that he faced during their prime. Joe has done exactly what he should have done given his position and talent, for that I commend him and he will forever be known and his place in the HOF is solidified as well as justified. This is just my opinion, I've watched his career for quite a number of years and I find it hard to rate him due to his style, offensive execution and level of opposition. We agree to disagree.
I've been pretty quiet on the Calzaghe/Lacy subject up to now. After watching Lacy last night I think that between the shoulder injury and the Calzahge beat down, he is a step behind what he used to be. Lacy was never all that great to begin with. However, sometimes it's not just who a fighter beats, but how he beats them. Against Joe, Lacy did not have a chance. He got embarrased, humilated, and beat up. Had it been a competetive fight, that would be a different stroy.
Jeff was totally outclassed and dominated, what surprises me was Jeff's inability to make the fight more rugged (ala Bika) for Joe. Calz hands where just too quick his stamina was excellent his workrate unmatched.
The really means nothign part of your post is what I have a problem with. this was a unification fight and at the time Lacy was the favorite and considered the biggest threat. Everyone left and right was saying that Joe was scared and that he would not take the fight and **** it anyway cause everyone knows that Lacy really is the man of the division. The bout did have significance because Joe took the biggest risk fight and not only won but completly dominated. it is definatly not his career defining win but it dispells the myth the Joe wouldn't take a challenge. Just because the "challenge" that everyone wanted was not good enough to land a single punch does not mean that going into the fight it was not a risk. Lacy was coming off a stream of vicotires and KO'ing everyone that he fought. People are doignt he same thing with Kessler. at the time people were saying he is too _______ for Joe and Joe is scared to face such a big threat. Joe faces himand wins and then people say he was nothing to begin with.
all these threads about calzaghe in relation to lacy need to end. calzaghe's win over lacy is a very good win because lacy was at the time a good fighter (having beaten several good fighters himself and some with ease) and it was a dominant performance. it's not career defining but it's still a very solid win regardless of how lacy looked last night. and i don't like calzaghe.
