Cortez gave the signal to the fighters to fight. Time was in. Cortez looked at he time keeper to see whether he started the clock. Whether he did or not, the signal to fight supersedes. Time was in. Replays show that Floyd looks up and checks the clock and see how much time was left. He approached Ortiz with a look on his face that anyone should be able to recognize as hostile. Ortiz was so wrapped up in the headbutt he was not aware of Floyd's state of mind. Ortiz knew time was in went to touch up again before fighting. Ortiz should have backed off in a defensive position. He backed up with his hands down. Floyd refrained from hitting him for about three seconds, then the two-piece. My first reaction was that it was unsportsmanlike. Now when I see the replay I laugh almost uncontrollably. What do you expect Floyd to do? Time was clearly in, there wasn't much time left and Ortiz had just purposely headbutted, which could have caused a stoppage of the fight. Should Floyd have warned him that he was gonna swing with the left? Ortiz should have taken the stance of most boxers who touch gloves, you see it in most fights. They do so in a cautious manner, protecting themselves usually offering a hand while the body and head are back. Finally, make no mistake, that fight was ending with Ortiz getting KTFO one way or the other. Floyd had a tell on Ortiz, could not miss with the right hand, wasn't getting touched and had staggered Ortiz with an uppercut earlier that round. Ortiz had three more rounds max of eating right hands. Two if Floyd got aggressive.
He said let's go and the fight was on. Why was Ortiz looking to Cortez ? He's not there to block punches
He actually wasn't looking at Ortiz. He was looking at Floyd until Floyd manually adjusted his vision with the left hook. In seriousness I think victor lost his concentration and couldn't mentally let go of the headbutt. Victor got frustrated because he was getting hit hard and wasn't able to hit Floyd with a solid shot. The headbutt was on purpose but a reaction from the frustration and victor was sorry immediately afterwards. Doesn't make it right, but he was more concerned with having his apology recognized and accepted than the fight.
Floyd could have clocked Ortiz when he first tried to hug him after the headbutt...when they were still against the ropes.
He looked at cortez after the hook. Floyd took a split second and said fuxk it and put him out. Cortez called time in. No controversy, just disappoinent from paying customers. Me included but that was ortiz fault. He got his hugs in, he heard lets go, they squared up and he drops his guard TWICE?! Would you trust a guy who wad throwing head butts at you all night, to not do something coming out of a clinch? I wouldn't.
Agreed. I actually wished he didn't throw the punch because it was somewhat cheap and I would have liked to see two more rounds of Ortiz getting taken apart. What I don't like is the characterization that Floyd was deceptive with the punch. If you look at his face you can see he has cruel intentions as soon as Cortez says let's go.
I don't know, it looks to me that Ortiz's eyes weren't focusing on much of anything after the left hook except the stars dancing around his head. I think he was out on his feet after the first punch. He did it against Mosely multiple times and others. Protect yourself at all times should be something a trainer stresses against Mayweather.
Ortiz is looking right at Joe after the hook. Mosley is smart enough to react. And Ortiz is dumb enough to stand there and play pogs
