    this thread got a bit side tracked. I believe we are in 1887. Who are the other guys that might stake a claim for the title. Is it Dempsey, Sullivan or has Jack McAuliffe or Carney done enough to challenge for supremacy. Welterweight champion Pat Duffy was putting a reasonable run together also. Peter Jackson was the australian champion but probabluy hadnt done enough to challenge Dempsey.

    Fitzsimmons had the name Slavin, Bonner, Seale and Hall among others on his list. He definitely wasnt as highly regarded as Dempsey at the time, but with hindsight, i think he would have won a match at this time. Still, i think the championship probably needs to stay with Dempsey for 1987. Is there anyone else i missed for this year?
