Anyone have any thoughts on this?

What strikes me is that napoles and locche spent quite a long time being ducked by the belt holder of the time.

I'm not totally convinced with the lineage through Billy ocstello but I don't think anyone was doing any better.

I remember the hype around Judah so I'm pretty convinced by his status as top dog until Tszyu dethroned him.

also Once Bradley went inactive after beating alexander and repeatedly ducking khan, I can't keep him at the top so Khan takes his place.

What's your criteria again? Tyszu fought weak opposition from 01-04. You dropped Bradley for avoiding Khan after recently beating Alexander but Hatton turned the Mayweather fight down in '04 and '05, he avoided Witter from 00-08 too and instead managed to find fighters coming off gift decision wins (Castillo, Malignaggi 2 of them, Urango). Bradley's duck was also probably down to management issues with Shaw, as he stated, and now he's with Arum he wants Khan. Bradley was also inactive at 140lbs for less time than Hatton was from Castillo-Lazcano

weak opposition? he unified the 3 belts in dominant fashion. I can't think of anyone doing better than Tszyu in them years nor can I think of anyone ranking above him.

Hatton turning down floyd in 04 means nothing to me. in 05 hatton beat tszyu and maussa to unify two belts.

A fight with Witter would have been great and there was a point when witter (after knocking out Harris) has a decent argument for being the best out there but I think ricky was always better.

Don't care why Timbo ducked Khan, them two were literally neck and neck at the top and he went AWOL leaving Khan as top dog once he'd knocked out Judah.

    How would your timeline look?

as for criteria, there's no hard and fast rule, I pretty much read through the lineage and all the claimants (pre alphabet era I look at leading contenders (i.e. napoles and locce) and judge them year by year and in many cases fight by fight.

Tszyu went inactive in 04 I think and I was tempted to drop him but I don't think anyone did anything of real note during that time.

Do you think Floyd has a decent claim? I never considered it as overly legit but I might revisit.

It wasn't a consistent division early on and I'm not sure as to how recognised it was. From the Ortiz days it was ceratinly in full flow and has been ever since.

Well I woulnd't put him top 10 in this particulas division, nor any others to be honest.

I haven't finalised my top 400 or so but I'd imagine he'd be in the bottom hundred from the top of my head.

I'll let you know when I finalise my rankings :good

I'm just going off top of my head, not sure what the top "x" actually is yet.

There could be more than 400, however many there is though. this man will obviously be in it :good

    1. I'm talking between the Judah and Mitchell fights, he only fought Tackie and an old Leija, neither much cop. Mitchell btw was coming off a gift decision over Ndou himself

    2. He turned him down for a November showdown to fight Maussa who's probably the worst P4P titlist in history

    3. I'd have put money on Witter beating him, Hatton has nightmares with Southpaws, although in terms of who was actually better, I'd say they were about the same level ability wise

    4. It's close but Bradley has done more at 140 overall, he's unified 3 belts, beat a reigning LW unified champion (I count Campbell as a win) and arguably had a better 2011 thus far. You can't say Bradley being forced to proves Khan is better

    5. Depends on the criteria, ie 'the best', 'best wins on year', 'best

    6. I think this is the problem, there can be 3 different fighters who meet the following: who has the best wins year on year is 1 thing, lineage, who is the actual best in the time frame.

    7. I'd say on yearly wins Harris, Gatti and Mitchell have cases to be on better runs from 2002-2004, obviously none of them are better

    8. Not in terms of bests wins or lineage, in terms of who was the actual best, I think it's unquestionable that he was the best at the weight from 04-05. And if you factor in level of performances, his performances against Corley/Gatti were more impressive than Hatton's performances even though the opponent was lesser than a Tyszu

    1. Harris might have a case at some point but I'm not sure anyone else surpasse zoo during the time.

    2. A unification is a unification, maussa knocked out Harris which is better than anything floyd had done at the weight.

    3. You might put money on, but I wouldn't have done.

    4. No I don't think it was managerial at all, he said himself losing to khan would damage his chances of getting pac or floyd. This wasn't a manager stopping him fighting, it was more like bowe throwing the belt away rather than face lewis (I put Lewis above Bowe during that time as well, same way I put Wills above Dempsey when he chose Hollywood over continued negotiations)

5&6. Whatever criteria you choose. I've basically imagined I'm a sanctioning body and have backdated the award of my title from the start of a divisions global recognition. It's been fun so far, I'm on the LW's as we speak (type)

    7. Gatti no, Mitchell no, Harris probably but I'll look into that later.

    8. I can't see anyway Floyd is seen as the best at the weight tbh. Gatti is so many levels removed from Kostya that the two can't really be compared. Floyd didn't do enough at the weight for me, which is fine because the money was at WW. It just means he doesn't make my list :good

I got a fever, and the only prescription...

is that we put a stop to any mention of the WBS organizations and their tin belts. They have hobbled the sport.

HBO avoids mentioning them and that is a good start but it ain't enough. Even indirectly validating them is a mistake and we do so when we talk about "unified titles" and "undisputed." Those terms don't mean dink. They only boost Jose Silly-Man & co. and decades of nonsense.

    Nah imo that's absolute bull****.

These trinkets are portions of the world crown. unifications, imo, are always a good thing. I don't give a **** about a big fat mexican raking money in, what I give a **** about is Leonard and Hearns unifying to see who's the best in the division; Lewis and Holyfield unifying to see who's the best in the division etc etc.

As you can see, I only ever recognise one man but every one with a belt has a valid claim that should atleast be considered before being dismissed.

the man makes the belt, dismissing all belts as meaningless is naive (although it's something I used to do before seeing sense)

Yep, that's why you think Floyd fighting Senchenko is a viable option, and IMO that's bollocks :good
