Napoles, Stracey, Palomino, Benitez, Leonard, Duran, Leonard....Curry, Honeyghan, Starling. Not too hard Greg :good
How do you nerds come up with the time to write all this ****? Dont you have jobs or girlfriends or lives at all?
We all completed the job phase of life and are now fortunate enough to be millionaires with lots of girlfriends and no need to work.
I'm a teacher who lives with his fiancee. Shock horror: someone who's passionate about boxing posting about classic boxers in the classic boxing section of a boxing forum! Whatever was I thinking? As a participant sport football is my game but as far as being spectator boxing is as good as it gets and i'm bloody interested in it's great and glorious history. Perhaps you don't share my passion but then i'd ask why you bother posting in this forum?
Another update, this time until the early 80's. I revisited my choices for the early 40's and decided Cocoa and Williams were better shouts until 1942 were robinson really starts to gain momentum. Interestingly, no matter how hard I looked, I couldn't find room for Burley at the top of the 147 division; His best run was during armstrong's tenure at the helm. Why did Armstrong and Burley never meet? was Burley7 regarded as his number 1 contender or is that just a mixture of hindisght and my intepretation? The late 70's were very hard to split: Cuevas and Palomino wre neck and neck, obviously Carlos had a better start but it seems to me that pipo overtook him towards the end of the 70's. Benitez wasn't the best of champs but with victory over Palomino he did better than anyone else that year (up until Leonard). Now Leonard takes Benitez's crown before losing it to Duran. I don't think he reclaimed his crown until Hearns unified with him: Tommy at that point is a superb WW smashing through everyone, I don't know what contemporary opinion was on the two but it seems to me that Leonard truly regained his crown that night because a no mas victory isn't as good as what tommy did that year. So now e're in 1982 and Leonard has retired, I'm looking forward to the next few years!
I'll help you out: Their isn't a no.1 until Curry beats McCrory to unify. Curry, Honeyghan, Starling, Blocker :good You're in the 90s. Piece of ****!
Ok this is my preliminary timeline. Seems pretty straight forward from Leonard retiring to me up until Whittaker's move up in weight. When he returned he wasn't quite the same and was struggling with Rivera, but that's still better than anyone tito was fighting at the time I believe? I had pea beating Oscar so once pea goes inactive tito rises to the top and stays there until oscar defeats him. It then follows the basic lineage from Mosley through to Judah, but Baldomir was never top dog, that mantle goes to Margarito, he was the one who was seen as the beast until williams defeated him. Then obviously it's all Mayweather until he retires when Cotto rose to prominence until he was blasted away by marg who was in turn blasted away by Mosley. Inactivity led to Pacman claiming top spot with his stoppage over cotto but recently his performances compared to floyd's are lacking so I believe floyd is currently the premiere WW in the world. Any major objections?
I have Mayweather consistently being the Lineal champ. His retirement was a load of bollocks. Apart from that, sound as a pound :thumbsup
This is actually very surprising and interesting. In terms of longevity(ie dominance), It looks as if Tommy Ryan was the most dominant, from Sugar Ray Robinson and Pernell whitaker. It seems that it is reasonable to rate Ryan as the greatest welterweight ever, doesnt it?
I think lineage is over stated personally but I totally see the argument for it because I used to be in favour before my most recent boxing epiphone. I don't think it's enough to "beat the man" I think you have to be beating better people in a better fashion than anyone else. Still, at the very worst i'm thoroughly enjoying my research atm! The end goal is to rank, or tier, every one of my "champs" in an atg p4p sense. That'll be fun and will be a great excuse to watch some great fights :good
I'm going over my timeline and have made these slight alterations so far to allow it to be slightly more fluid and representative. YPJ definitely seems to have knocked out barbados close to the limit, the issue is then he moves up and doesn't really fight another ww. Another issue is that Walcott has gone awol due to shooting himself! the only two ww's left, of note, seem to be holly and langford. when they fight I recognise the winner as the best WW in light of everyone else leaving. Langford himself then leaves the division so the ww division only really has lw's left in it which is where gans vs twin comes into it. When walcott weighs in and claims his title back I'm confident he usurps gan's claim. I'm going through the whole timeline but wanted to post this bit first incase boiler wanted to add any more thoughts to it? the timeline flows imo. dixie kid seems to have a bogus claim so i'm not to fussed about his standing in all of this.
