Since we had an instance of it last night, I thought I’d start a thread to explore this phenomenon. We know AJ was under, per Eddie Hearn, tremendous stress and trained real hard and wanted to win. I did some research and it turns out most fighters are under pressure, train hard and want to win. And since these are the conditions that spark such behavior, surely there are tons of cases of the losing challenger trashing the champion’s belt(s) and chucking them out of the ring when they lose. I mean, it must happen pretty frequently, right? So I thought we could start a list. I’ll get us going: 1. Anthony Joshua vs. Oleksandr Usyk II 2. … OK, I need some help now.
Not exactly the same thing but after John Ruiz lost to Nicolai Valuev, Ruiz's trainer, Norman Stone, grabbed the belt from the champion and was parading around the ring as though he had won it. I can't think of another time when the belts were lobbed out the ring though.
Hopkins jumped out of the ring vs Chad Dawson in their first fight. He was technically the 'belt holder' at the time.
The closest thing I have seen to that was Shooter McGavin trying to steal and run off with Happy Gilmore's gold jacket.
