Welcome to China and the convention Tim, how are you doing tonight after that long light?

Oh thanks, it' a pleasure to be here. I'm here at the WBC convention meeting a lot of people and supporting my sanctioning body!

You're coming off your first successful defense against Edner Cherry. There's a lot going on in your division right now. What sort of plans do you have next?

Right now it looks like I'm mandated to fight the winner of Ricardo Torres and Kendall Holt III. They're fighting in December 13th I believe in Atlantic City. So I'm gonna be there live in the front row rooting on the winner! So that'll be my next fight, maybe early next year, February or March.

Now when you say "mandated," how are you "mandated" to fight a champion of another sanctioning body?

Well, it's more like a promotional deal between Bob Arum and my promoters Gary shaw and Thompson Boxing. So I believe they may have a contract, I'm not sure but they told me I'm going to fight the winner of Torres – Holt III.

What did you think of their first two fights?

Kendall Holt- he's a smart fighter. Ricardo Torres- he's predictable. He just comes forward. He's a big slugger, big puncher. The first fight was a good fight. Kendall Holt had the fight won and he lost concentration for a split second and he got caught with a big punch and he went down. Especially when he's in someone else's home town, you can't do that. So he ended up losing the fight regardless of whether or not they called it controversial, he lost. The second fight, you know um, it was an exciting fight. I think it was maybe sixteen seconds or so (It was actually 61 seconds). As you see, Kendall Holt got knocked down, but he got back up. He came back through it and knocked Ricardo Torres out. So I'm looking forward to the third bout. Ricardo Torres will probably be more patient and Kendall Holt will be Kendal Holt, stay on the outside, use his reach and just outbox him.

Of course on Friday night local time, there is a card here in Chengdu which we'll all be attending featuring another possible opponent of yours, Devon Alexander. What are your thoughts on Alexander?

Devon Alexander, I've known him since the amateurs and I believe we fought in the amateurs. This is the professionals now. He's a grown man, I'm a grown man. We're not little boys any more. He's number one, he's mandated to fight hopefully an eliminator and I'm willing and waiting. He's gotta go through steps just like I did. I'd love to get it on with Devon Alexander. He's a great fighter. He's hungry. Those are the type of fights that boxing needs.

If he comes through his fight successfully this Friday, he'll be 16-0. Do you think he's ready to be a top contender and fight somebody like you?

Well, he fought a top contender and he beat him convincingly (DeMarcus Corley). He showed the boxing world that he beat the best out there. He fought "Chop Chop" Corley, a veteran in the game. He's been in the ring with everybody and he (Alexander) beat him like an amateur basically. So he's proven himself and I think he's ready. I think the young lion is ready. He has a good team behind him, a good trainer and I think he's ready for the big step up. We'll have to see it this week.

Paulie Malignaggi and Ricky Hatton go at it for Malignaggi's IBF belt soon. How do you see that going?

With Malignaggi, the hand worries me. If he can keep his hand OK., he can outbox Hatton. He fought a monster in Cotto and showed a lot of heart in going the full twelve rounds. Hatton hasn't looked good in his last couple fights, even when he won. He's tough but his style has taken a lot out of him.

Earlier today, President Sulaimán talked about meeting with the other major sanctioning bodies in early 2009 and moving toward having "universal" champions where al the champions fight each other to end up with one champ. Is that where you'd like to see things go in boxing?

That's exactly what I'm talking about. You know, boxing needs a universal champion, an undisputed champion of the world. I wanna definitely capture that WBO belt, and then the WBA eventually and the IBF and be the reigning champion and the number one fighter at 140 pounds. That's my dream, that's my goal. I'm still working hard, I'm still hungry. I haven't lost my hunger for the game. All belt holders watch out because I'm coming and I'm coming hard. Desert Storm is coming to get your title!

Tim, thanks for taking the time out of your long first day here in China to talk with Fightnews. Good luck and enjoy your stay!

Very good post. Would like to see him fight Torres for the excitability factor.

He should fight Lamont Peterson, I think that would be an interesting fight. Actually, Ortiz should fight Peterson in a 140 prospect battle! Now THAT would be a fight.

He said(Bradley) that he would fight the winner of Torres vs Holt III(hopefully Torres) in feb or march,if not Devon Alexander. He can either get a proven contender(top 10 guy) or a prospect.Good agenda anyway.:good

Great interview. Nice to see that Bradley is a thoughtful and eloquent kid. I really hope he can blossom into a star, as he's the kind of ambassador boxing needs.

If this can happen, this would be the REAL news. Suliaman is probably just talking out of his ass, but if the sanctioning bodies can somehow agree to this, it would be HUGE for the sport and would be much better for everyone in the long run.

They should wait until they're both champs before making that fight. There's more than a decent chance that both of them are better than anyone else in 140 right now, including Bradley. I'd pick Bradley to beat Ortiz based on styles, but Peterson might actually be able to outbox Bradley.

So then there'd be (top to bottom): Unified champ, WBC emeritus/WBA superchamp, WBC champ, WBA champ, IBF champ, WBO champ, IBO champ, IBA champ, WBU champ, WBF champ etc.
I'd like to see the formation of a union, not only to combat fighters getting ripped off but also it could mandate that it's members only recognise one sanctioning body.
