Weekend Review: WBC reminds us of why we hate sanctioning bodies MOST RIDICULOUS Acknowledgment of sanctioning bodies: The decision of the WBC to strip Timothy Bradley of his junior welterweight belt and sanction the Erik Morales-Jorge Barrios as a title fight was resoundingly criticized, which was appropriate. Change will never take place unless we continue to expose the disgusting underbelly of boxing. Heres the thing, though: We all continue to play along. The corrupt sanctioning bodies rig the rankings to maximize their profits, the promoters push them to do so for the same reason, the boxing commissions give tacit approval by working with the sanctioning bodies, the fighters willingly pay sanctioning fees to become champions and improve their marketability, members of the media give the bogus titles validity by making reference to them and fans accept titleholders as champions. We all know exactly whats going on its all a load of garbage -- but we continue to take part in it. Were all guilty of perpetuating this farce. MOST RIDICULOUS II The payoff: The motivation of the sanctioning bodies, promoters and fighters is clear; the emphasis on bogus titles increases their profits. The sanctioning bodies have created all kinds of absurd titles interim, regular, super, emeritus, champion in recess, etc. because they take a small percentage of every pot when one of their titles is at stake. The more titles, the more money they make. The promoters and their fighters also make more money because champions are more-marketable than other fighters. So whats the payoff for the boxing writers and fans? We need championships, the ultimate accomplishment in the sport. That has always been the case. THE RING has what we believe are the most-unbiased rankings and crown champions, who are recognized by legitimate media outlets. However, the fact is the majority of fans worldwide still recognize the sanctioning-body titleholders. For that reason, we really have no choice but to acknowledge them -- as painful as that is. MOST SCREWED Timothy Bradley: Bradley couldve avoided the WBCs ax if he had fought Amir Khan on July 23. He had a chance to unify the junior welterweight titles and earn a seven-figure payday in the process but chose to walk away. Mistake. That doesnt mean he deserved to lose his title, though. Bradley fought only six months ago, which hardly renders him inactive. Other WBC titleholders have gone much longer than six months without defending their titles yet werent stripped because it suited the WBC. One example is Oscar De La Hoya when he held the WBC junior middleweight title; he went about a year between defenses. The fact is that WBC officials want Erik Morales as their titleholder because he generates a lot of money. Simple as that. The same with Saul Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who one can also argue werent deserving of title shots. Bradley simply isnt the attraction those Mexican fighters are. And he paid a price for it.
Finally some exposes what we all aready know, things like this need to be dicussed more often, the WBC have reuined the impact that Khan vs Bradley would have had. Great thread, keep it up 4real.
This is just disgusting timothy has worked hard for that belt, yes he and khan should make a fight but wbc have taken the belt off timothy to make a title fight for morales/jorge fight? This sort of corruption in boxing should be stopped i can not believe this is even happening. How can we have a champion when the organizations are just taking belts from the champs and just basically giving it anyone? This is from wbc as well, its the most obvious world title belt recognizable to an ordinary fan.
Unfortunately, this doesn't surprise me in the slightest. It's as if all the sanctioning bodies are having a big joke at our expense by seeing how much they can get away with. I think they've named Bradley "champion in recess" so they can continue to claim sanctioning fees even while they're ****ing him over. You have to give them credit for doing this **** and managing to keep a straight face. The WBA, with. their three Middleweight champions, still takes some beating though.
seen this coming, should have fought khan, I though he had a good chance, meh, serves him right for being a coward, he is terrified of khan. edit: sanctioning bodies should be abolished though, it really is a mess.
You're missing the point totally atsch Yeah timothy should of fought khan but khan was not his mandatory how can wbc just strip timothy of his belt. I agree timothy should fight khan but now the fight 100% wont happen, wbc are corrupt organization. Even if your a timothy hater you have to agree timothy did not deserve this bull****.
I'm not a tim hater by any means, but he doesn't deserve any belt if he is so obviously terrified of fighting his main rival, yeah it was very wrong what the WBC did, but I don't have THAT much sympathy for a "champion" who doesn't want to fight the guy he has to beat to PROVE he's the true champion. I don't care that much because WBC this IBF that, Khan and Bradley don't need alphabet titles to know that whoever wins out of these two is the top of the division. And on top of that, I was very dismayed at the realisation Bradley was scared of Khan, really lost a lot of respect for him, and like I said, I gave him a very good chance, so theres no excuse for him to be as so oviously as afraid as he was.
How many fighters never even got a title shot because they refused to play the game? Timmy is a big boy, he tried to play it cute and now the wbc called his bluff. When boxing was at its peak it was still all about money, the only honour you get is when two warriors face each other in the ring after the business is done. With boxing in the state it is I don't see why anyone is shocked by a sanctioning body choosing to maximize its profit by giving a genuine big name fighter another title shot. Morales is still better than Bradley now IMO, just a lightweight Holyfield with his headbutt tactics.
