Marriaga is getting popped in the mouth with jabs and caught with hooks as he circles with his arms low. Avila is throwing bunches of jabs and following with a step-through right and some body shots. Very little from Marriaga, and missing when he throws.

Yeah, definitely not laying down or in awe of the moment - in fact, Marriaga is the one that is a bit shell-shocked and he's the one coming off a big fight.

edit: that was until about halfway into round 3, when Marriaga pulled a complete 180° turn.

 

Round 3

Marriaga is caught by some more jabs and interrupted when he loads up body shots, dragging his arms in from his own sides, by Avila's hooks on his face, with his mouth hanging slack and jaw unhinged so their impact turns him with even more pronounced effect. Suddenly a flip switches in Marriaga and he begins to unroll a newly discovered hard jab. Good body shots and 1-2s from a high guard by Marriaga. Completely different fighter than he was in the first 2½ rounds.

This is a good fight. I can't believe all the snooty idiots who refuse to watch undercards and only tune in for the HBO televised portions are missing this.

Easily would have been worthy of being a main event on ESPN2 FNF tomb)

 

Round 4

Marriaga is bossing Avila, but not cowing him. Lots of two-way action, with Marriaga leading and making Avila yield space, but still getting hit even as he keeps a tight defense. Marriaga is stalking and banging Avila's guard down with the jab, then finding a home for the right with straights upstairs and scoops on the body. Avila is blocking and weaving his upper body and then flurrying up high.

Sheridan gave the first two rounds to Avila, third for Marriaga and the fourth even.

 

Oh man, Avila is made of IRON. :scaredas:

 

Round 5

Marriaga is doubling up on right hands, bursting through Avila's gloves and mashing his mug. Avila is knocked into an involuntary deep lean backward, a sitting duck for Marriaga's follow-up shots - and just takes all of them without blinking, even as sweat flies off his coif. Avila is flurrying where he can, rubbery at the waist, flopping in and out depending on whether Marriaga is bombarding him or not.
