He was inside tamayo, but when tamayo turtled he had no idea about how to get into his guard. He kept frontal the whole fight, and didnt figure out how to get his hits inside tamayo's guard once he turtled. He created no openings at all by side-stepping, for instance. You must force your opponent's guard positioning with some shots to create opening for the others, canelo is master doing that, valdez has no idea about how to do it. Didnt like him very much... Good boxer, ofc, but didnt like him.
