In our gym 14 oz. or heavier is allowed in sparring, but I know a few people who spar with 12 oz. gloves. We hit the bag with bag mitts, mine are 8 oz.

i once sparred a guy with 16oz gloves but im not joking they was hard as rocks and werent like normal sparring gloves they was like Reyes gloves (Punchers glove)

hurt like a ***** didnt help i didnt really like the guy and he didnt like me because he was a dirty ****er and i took no **** with him but he ended up going all out on me with them gloves hurt like a ***** i was ready to stop boxing it hurt so much but he never came back after that..

lesson of the story check your sparring partners gloves before you spar in case there trying to **** you up obviously only do it with people you dont know that well

14oz should be ok for sparring. Best thing to do is ask your coach before you buy. 14oz will also be fine for bag work.

If you go for the 'sugar' gloves, at your size i would suggest the 14oz, provided your coach clears you for sparring with them.

There is a big difference in the pocket size of a 14 and a 16oz glove. Most 14s fit me real snug, a lot of 16s are huge on me - especially Reyes. IMFs are probably more snug than most 16s. I think you'd be better off with 14s, unless your coach has a problem with using them to spar.

Some pro fighters don't even use gloves as small as 8 oz. either, I use my new 16 oz. training gloves for bagwork, etc... he could use 14 oz. I guess.

This is good info to listen to.

The inside size of gloves does vary to the weight though, and small hands do usually fit better into the lighter weight gloves.

Best bet is to try everything you look at on your firsts before purchasing. Hopefully there'll be a brand that fits you for size and is, at the same time, the correct weight (as above) for your use.
