Oh, he can definitely try it, my point was just that you need to have backup plans, and that tall fighters can be effective on the inside. You might be an outfighter, but if your opponent is better at pressuring you than you are at maintaining distance, you're not going to have a fun night.
There's no harm in telling a tall fighter to work the reach advantage, as long as it's not the only thing they know how to do. For awhile, the only sparring partner I could get was a good six inches shorter than me with little T-rex arms. I spent that time working on keeping the right distance and got a good handle on where and how to move...and then my trainer made me stop doing that once he saw I was too comfortable, and he made me work on inside fighting exclusively for a couple of weeks, just so I wouldn't rely too heavily on my reach and I'd have other tools at my disposal. I'm a couple of months off from my first fight and I imagine I probably WILL have a reach advantage I can use, but now it's not the only thing I've got going for me. I can fold up pretty small if I want to get inside.
You will live and die by your lead hand and your straight. Develop you lead hand like a mad man. Jab - Work on power, speed, and accuracy. Lead hook - Work on hooking off of the jab and feinting into landing a bomb Rear hand Straight - Work on being able to throw it FAST and lead with it occasionally Rear hand Uppercut - Work on taking a quick step back and throwing it fast as lightning CLINCHING!!! - Work on being able to stuff and hold the strongest guys possible!
i am also tall for my weight. First learn how to use your jab. But dont only be a long range fighter. Just because you are tall doesnt mean you are disadvantaged fighting in close. Learn to fight in close and learn to use angles. My style is setting up a counter punch off jabs or another is set up angles of jabs. I mainly counter punch because i have a good eye and good head movement. If i cant counter my oppoent i use fakes, head movement and angles. but the best tip i can give you is learn everything and then learn your style.
Well, if he's all-around better than you, yes...but that's rare. Many guys with good skills can be out-thought in the ring, and if you've got power, then nobody's guaranteed a win against you.
Point was, he said I failed to tell it would not work against a certain opponent. It would not work against many things. If your opponent is better at fighting small than you are at fighting tall, you're in for some pain. He was asking for general advice on what to do with length and reach, and that is fighting tall. And contrary to what Mr. V.I.P. said you won't need fast feet for it in general. You'll need fast feet if your opponent has fast feet, but that has little to do with fighting tall.
Been a while since I made this thread!! I've really improved a lot. I'm starting to get the better of some of the vets at the gym now, I really noticed how much I've improved when I was taking it to a guy who's about 35 a few days ago. He beat the hell out of me when I first started sparring. I've developed an Erik Morales type style, I really love it. I still get beat up with bunches of punches if a short guy gets inside sometimes. I'm hoping to fight Jully or August.
Nope, had a lot of stuff I needed to work on. I likely would of got blasted If I tried to get in the ring in october. I'm feeling really good now with over a year in the gym. My club is going to be putting on a show this summer and a lot of us will be having our first matches.
