Get countered with an overhand right, get countered with a hook, get countered with a jab, get countered to the body, etc.

There's a LOT more to fighting tall than jabbing.

In my first fight I didn't have my coach with me, so I was stuck with a (very good and experienced) corner who didn't know me at all. The only advice they could give me was "JAB." It doesn't work when your opponent can counter it at will.

You need an EXCELLENT jab if you plan to rely on it. In the amateurs, jabs don't score very well because they tend to be a tap. Normally, for a jab to count it has to be a left cross or an exceptionally powerful jab that really pushes a guy back or snaps his head.

Furthermore, the jab is the easiest punch to counter in boxing. It's a punch that everybody sees all the time. On top of that, it's not a terribly damaging punch, so if i know that you're going to nail me with one or two jabs on my way in, I can accept that, take them both on the forehead, and rip you with a body-head combination. Guess who just scored two points? The guy who's punches attracted the eye of the judges. That's life. Amateur judges are typically not that awesome at their jobs.
