So Martin Murray will enter his fifth attempt to win a recognized world title when he fights Billie Joe Saunders for his WBO Super Middleweight belt this weekend. I asked on another forum is there was any known precedent here, has this happened successfully for a previous challenger already? So far I've only been told that George Grove's won his first title in his fourth attempt, which I've not verified myself, nor have I even googled my question either. Sorry
You know what, I am glad you answered with that. I was thinking that if it had happened, it most likely would have been in the last 20ish yrs with all of the ABC org's titles to fight over. Wrong as is usually the case. Thanks
Quite a few took 5 attempts to became world champ: Somporn Seeta Tushiami Nishioka Marcos Villasana Rodel Mayol German Torres Luis Alberto Lazarte Jose Lopez
I totally missed the fight by just assuming it would be a daytime (here in the States) Saturday fight, which a lot of the bigger UK fights seem to have been for awhile now. According to the articles I have read, and the comments for those articles which I read, BJ Saunders did pretty much exactly that to Murray. And, with that I must say, as has often been said for who knows how long, sixth times a charm!
