Benitez didn`t have the reach to trouble Hagler that`s why Ray beat him too.

Hearns had the power to knock out Roldan at 160 I don`t think Trinidad`s power would have hasd that effect, Tommy also hurt Hagler at 160 and his KO over Shuler Trumps any of Trindad`s KO`s at 147, he also knocked out the light heavy champ Andries, Hearns was naturally big fighter that trained down, he was naturally bigger and more powerful than Trnindad.

Roberto Duran had substantially less reach (and height for that matter) than Benitez yet managed to beat Leonard just 7 months after Benitez failed to. To make things even more Twilight Zone like Benitez beat Duran less than 2 years later.

How much reach do you think Benitez needed to beat Leonard exactly? Did he need to match Leonard's 74"?? Would 76" have done the trick? Perhaps he needed 85" to be completely sure of getting the job done? Inquiring minds need to know Mark.

He needed to cut off the distance between him and Ray and get on the inside making reach a non-issue rather than stay on the outside and have a jabbing contest with a guy that has a longer jab, that would not have worked against the much longer and powerful jab of Hagler either.

Trinidad wasn't half the fighter Hearns was and didn't have his power either but there's some serious Tito-love going on in this thread

Hearns had the better right hand, and Tito had the better left hook.

Shot for Shot I'd say Hearns especially when he got snap of that right hand.

But Tito was a devastating puncher and I think the overall difference is marginal.

Both guys were good punchers and in someways relied too much on that and paid the price at times.

Power? Meh...I don’t get all this love for power that people talk about?

For me their power is on par with each other among the best ever at 147 and overrated from 160+. If I had to give an edge it would be narrow for Hearns...but it is so difficult to contrast?

Hearns was the more skilled boxer and had better range and timing, so that might make the comparison seem like it is him hands down.

I think Hearns is the superior fighter, but not convinced he is the more powerful puncher, as much as I believer he was the better boxer and timed his power shots better. Oh well

Hearns and not even close, despite Trinidad being a great puncher. The reason why is that Hearns' power was so great that he disposed of literally a dozen solid ranked guys or uber tough fringe contenders coming up at 147 that were so overwhelmed and intimidated by his power that they couldn't get close enough to hardly land a single meaningful punch. That's power. Trinidad was frequently crowded and hit repeatedly, wobbled and even knocked down by the same level of fighter.

I can't put anyone over Robinson as a puncher at 147. The guy was phenomenal and he had to agree to carry certain boxers just so he could get work. His record as impressive as it is has some carry jobs on there. At the Champion level Charlie Fusari being the most obvious.
Tommy Hearns was not a better puncher than Ray Robinson. No way, no how.

Hearns for me. Funny thing is, everyone goes on about Tommy's right hand for very good reasons but he had an absolutely awesome left hook, especially to the body, that he under utilized. I recall Virgil Hill who was hit with both right hands and left hooks saying it was the hooks that really hurt him. When Tommy turned in the left hook at welterweight that's when he tended to really nail people.

Trinidad is definitely right up there with welterweight punchers of all time but its Tommy for me.
