Tito Ortiz, where do you rank him in LHW history

    With his career coming to a close, where would you rank Tito?

    Has wins over Wanderlei, Vitor, Forrest, Ken Shamrock, Guy Mezger, Evan Tanner

    How badly do his defeats whilst in his prime to Frank Shamrock (arguable if he was PRIME), Randy & Chuck hurt his legacy?

    And how badly do the run of losses at the tail end of his career affect his standing?

    Was he just the best in a poor era in the UFC, or is his GNP style underrated?

    He's still relatively competitive for a guy who's been in the game for 15 years, NEARLY got the sub on past contenders in Machida & Evans, and beat up Bader quicker than the current Champ

    i never liked the guy, but he did have some nasty GnP....but, and i know this isn't fair, but i will never NEVER get the image of his big ass bobble head chasing frank shamrock around and losing...he seriously looked like a fairy tail mongoloid giant stumbling around chasing a 12-year-old

    I do think the point is fair that he's more famous for his post fight interviews than his compelling fight style.

    But to be fair to Tito he was dominating one of the best in the world for a long stretch and never made the same mistake with regards to conditioning as he did against Frank

    Maybe his stand up remained 'functional', but his cardio was second to none

    He got injured, got old and despite evolving he didn't quite have the ability or tools to stay legendary into the next era. Just imagine if his triangle stayed locked on Machida, just imagine if his guillotine locked on Evans. Just imagine if he didn't lose the point against Evans the first time. Even against Griffin, he would have big moments but by and large he needed a bit of luck to make up for his lack of ability and tools. I always thought average stamina hurt him because what ability he did have needed to be combined with tenacity.

    Nevertheless, he still has the most defences in LHW history and his record still has Ws next to names like Silva, Tanner, Matyushenko, Shamrock, Cote, Belfort and Griffin.

    He's one of the top tier though. Even his losses, most of them he was competitive and had his moments where a slightly more athletic ex-champion might have been able to finish the fight. :smoke

    For me, the top of the pack at lhw is (not in any strict order):

    Shogun, Jones, Wanderlei, Rampage, Chuck, Hendo


    After that, there is the second grouping:

    Couture, Machida, Ortiz, Belfort, Evans, etc...



    The quality of opponent in Tito's lhw reign is not strong enough to justify him being in the top grouping. The most important thing is the calibre of fighter that guys have beaten, and Tito is not quite on the same level as the top guys IMO.

    I think the point was ''if'' he could have won those fights he would be rated higher. And he would have won them if he was slightly better :conf
