Tomorrow in Bangkok, world title eliminator to determine the #1 contender for IBF super bantamweight champion Ryosuke Iwasa. Doheny of Ireland is currently ranked third (with both the #1 and #2 slots ahead of him vacant) and Chaiporn seventh. @Boxing Prospect or any of my other Asian boxing aces - got the inside track on time/channel/undercard?
This is among the last significant 12-rounders of 2017 (barring only the Japanese world championship matches on New Year's weekend) and if televised will be among the last handful of boxing cards to be aired globally anywhere for the remainder (other than Japan's pair, there is an Italian domestic heavyweight title clash, scheduled for 10 rounds, between Gianmarco Cardillo and Ivan De Berardino on December 29th). Of all those above it might be the most competitive match (with any real implications on the world stage) on paper left before we rip off the last cute puppy or kitty (or dinosaur, or hot shirtless but suspendered firefighters if that's your thing) page & toss out the calendars. The most exciting will probably be Cardillo vs. De Berardino, to be honest (check out their first match on YouTube! Wild ride...) The "biggest" in terms of marquee name will be Naoya Inoue's title defense on December 30th but that is a squash job, utter mismatch. He will destroy Yoan Boyeaux easily. The actual last card will be on New Year's Eve, with the straw-to-fly range world championship triple-header put on by Watanabe Promotions.
Chaiporn has beaten Rasmanudin x2, which might actually be his best h2h scalp. That wouldn't be so bad if Chaiporn were a prospect with 15 bouts under his belt. As it stands though, for having 55, that is really...not good. Doheny meanwhile has two wins that blow any of Chaiporn's outta the water, including a far more proven Thai in former WBA flyweight champ Sutep Wangmuk (aka Denkaosan Kaovichit) and Filipino glass cannon Marco Demecillo
Another point in Doheny's favor: Two of Chaiporn's ten losses have come to lefties and they were the best couple he faced. The classiest southpaw Chaiporn has actually defeated was Shingo Kawamura, who is 15-3-1 (7) and whose other two losses are stoppages, both at the hands of guys making their pro debut. Kawamura went twelve with Chaiporn, without any knockdowns.
You the MAN! Is that the main event or televised card start time? I'm hoping the latter, because I'd much rather set my alarm for like 6am. I don't really feel the need to limit myself to a couple hours' sleep see a bunch of Siamese undercard rabble.
No idea. That was the time Doheny gave on his FB page but it’s a two hour time slot so I wouldn’t doubt there being at least one undercard bout on the telecast.
Ugh, two hours eh? That means I better drag my was outta bed at 5am EST sharp at the latest if I want to catch this...
Chai Porn.... what an unfortunate last name that would be amongst deep south whites and blacks. Doheny will stop Chaiporn in the mid rounds, I doubt this'll be all that competitive.
Wow, some endorsement there - I don't rate Grado that highly but that's still quite a step up for TJ at this stage.
