blazing-rob, whole your argument is flawed. It's based off a twisted perception of reality. Let me explain. We'll start with Calzaghe. You claim Calzaghe gets no credit for fighting Hopkins or Jones. Well, many have given him credit for fighting Hopkins. Hopkins was past his best, but he was still good enough to give Calzaghe a stern test. His win over Pavlik only served to strenghten that win for Calzaghe. Jones on the other hand has been considered damaged goods for some time. He was destroyed in 3 straight fights and even Calzaghe himself said he was washed up and fighting him would be a waste. He then tried to backtrack on that by claiming Jones redeemed himself with 3 "good" wins. However, this is laughable. Prince Badi Ajanu was trash. Hanshaw was coming up in weight and still took him the distance. Hanshaw would go on to get destroyed by Dirrell in 6 rounds. Tito was completely shot and fighting 10 lbs. above his highest weight, and Roy still couldn't stop him. So why does Calzaghe deserve much credit for beating Jones? Onto Dawson. Dawson has not gotten all that much credit for beating Johnson or Tarver. Many still try to claim Johnson beat him. Many also claim Tarver was shot despite him being the champ and despite the fact that he just came off of a lopsided decision over Woods. Now do some give Dawson credit for those two wins? Of course they do. However, there are plenty more who have panned him for fighting old men. So you see blazing_rob, your complaint is totally unfounded. There is no double standard. Both men have been panned. And there are plenty of people(foreign and domestic) who have already written Dawson off as a hypejob.
So thats your answer to everything is it FAIL, SON , DAWSON AND JOHNSON WOULD KILL CALZAGHE, JOES A BUM...ETC ETC Your really Intelligent arent you. you dont know the meaning to sensible debate.
In the first round he landed a clean punch that was more his wrist and Calzaghe went down. My prediction of this fight was a wide UD for Calzaghe, Jones would probably be able to take 2 or 3 of the early rounds because even though it's not nearly what it was, his handspeed is still faster than anyone Calzaghe has fought and he still has power to make Calzaghe pay if he makes a mistake, but Calzaghe will adjust to the speed and Roy will gradually slow down. Roy only took one round IMO, but still, what happened is basically what I thought was going to happen (although by fight night I was leaning more to a stoppage for Calzaghe). By the late rounds Roy was lying on the ropes, just covering up, even when Calzaghe stood right in front of him with his arms down and his head out Jones still did nothing most of the time by the later rounds, similar to what Ali did in his fight with Holmes. Roy took a beating and showed his heart for not quitting, but most of what made him special in his prime had left him. Like I said, he has been shot for a while, and all of his previous fights in the past 4 years show this. A shot Jones is still better than just an average shot fighter, but compared to his prime, he is nothing now. All said, whether you classify him as shot or way past his prime (he is at the very least that), I don't see the significance of this win for Calzaghe. He's got better wins and better accomplishments that solidify his great status than beating up on this version of Roy Jones.
... HOPKINS IS A P4P TOP 4..... KESSLER WAS THE UNIFIED CHAMP ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!! DAWSON AND JOHNSON ARE BELOW HOPKINS AND CLAZAGHE IN THE RING RANKINGS, ESPN, BOXREC, FIGHTNEWS AND OTHER RANKINGS.../ NOW YOU SHOW ME WHERE IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT DAWSON OR JOHNSON IS RATED HIGHER....
Big reg ...Im not saying joes win over hopkins and jones deserves credit, i know a lot of people are saying that he does, i wish joe would fight the dawsons/pavliks/taylors of this world .my beef is a lot of people on this forum dismiss the fact that next best thing is dawson is fighting guys past there prime but thats ok. im not saying that every american feels like that but it comes across as a lot just dismiss calzaghe because he isnt american..my post might as come across as being negative or anti american but its not my intention..myabe i was looking for unbiased reply and its nice to have a sensible reply from you unlike some people on here.. :thumbsup
My point is that there is no double standard. Everyone is not going to agree on this forum. However, the reality is that Jones was damaged goods. Joe even admitted as much himself. Hopkins still had something left anf many have given him credit for that fight. Meanwhile, Dawson has gotten his fair share of criticism for his fights against Tarver and Johnson. Many Americans have given Calzaghe credit. I mean the man is getting paid millions to fight here on our networks. Ring Magazine(an Amerian magazine) has him ranked as the 3rd best fighter in the world. Many other American writers and publications have him 2 or 3. How much more respect does he need. On the other hand, some are hyping him up Dawson, but many have also written him off and labeled him a fraud. All in all, I don't believe that your complaint is accurate.
im not saying saturdays win for calzaghe is great jones was in his prime blah blah my point is a lot of people on here dismiss the fact that young american fighters also fight old guys past there best but thats ok. You make good points and i agree with a lot you say i know calzaghe would win by a big UD or a late TKO with jones being to tired at the closing stages i also thought calzaghe could have finished jones anytime he wanted after round 7 but maybe calzghe was enjoying himself to much or he didnt want to hurt roy more than he had to. Who knows. it seems on this forum that its one rule for one fighter and another rule for another if that makes sense.
Fair enough dully noted but we all know tv stations/ networks build up fighters and blow smoke up there ass to get max audeince when it comes to fight night. i dont see american papers or there tv channels just what it seems a huge amount of people on here dissing and not respecting a world class fighter.
Because Dawson is still young and trying to make a name for himself fighting Tarver(who was the IBF champ) and Johnson who is a great test for the young buck. Calzaghe fought Hopkins which was a good win but fighting Jones??? Calzaghe HIMSELF said Jones was SHOT. Dawson is just starting his career, Calzaghe is at the tail end and is suppose to be showing us how great he really is but fighting Jones isn't doing that.
