...for having called him calslappy, calfaghy, etc. ...for having laugh at him for being knocked by Kabary Salem... ...for his questionning his opposition he had over the year's... After, viewing several of his fights, and paying a closer attention to him, I'm obliged to correct myself, and give all my respect to Joe Calzaghe. Simple put, he's one of the greatest boxers in the world P4P, his skills, workrate are incredible. He can brawl, he can boxe, he can pretty much do all he wants with any boxer he's faced against... This weekend, he'll prove it once again with an impressive win over Kessler. Here's to Joe! for unifying the titles, and proving all the critics wrongs... He is truely a legendary fighter! :good
doesn't matter what he thinks cos to change is mind like that means he knew **** all about calzaghe in the 1st place. people who know **** about a fighter shouldn't be commenting on them.
Well... just about everyone here on esb (except the true calzaghe's fan) thought Jeff Lacy would finally be the one to beat Calzaghe... and I doubt, they haven't seen calzaghe a couple of times before saying that... ... at least I've got the balls to admit I was wrong about Calzaghe, and I don't have to wait until he has actually unified the titles to admit that he's actually a great fighter. :deal
...no there is no custard pie... I'm saying it for the records, I was dead wrong about Calzaghe. I'm honestly predicting a convincing win for Calzaghe over Kessler. ...and instead of being forced to admit that Calzaghe is great fighter only after he has unified the titles, I prefer to say it beforehand.
Congratulations on being one of the few real men on ESB. It's a shame they're not more like you, who are man enough to admit they were wrong. Even if JC loses on Saturday, he's still been a great fighter, as anyone who saw his thrashing of Lacy will agree
I had a very similar experience with Calzaghe in the past few months also. I didn't have the same knowledge about the SMW division and its history that I have about most of the other divisions, so I was quick to dislike Calzaghe just because some Americans that I know hated him. After learning more about him and other mid 90's-now SMW's, I have gained great respect for him and have grown to like him after watching a lot of documentaries about his life. Casual boxing fans in America are usually ignorant when it comes to European boxers and the general dislike that they have for Calzaghe is silly. He has a fast style that is a pleasure to watch and elite skills to go along with it, plus he is tough as hell and has underrated heart. If he was American, he would be a superstar. When he beats Kessler this Saturday, he deserves to be regarded as the #2 ATG SMW after Jones. I can't wait for a possible Dawson-Calzaghe matchup also.
LOL .... I have of course! I've got alot of respect for Kessler, in no ways I am saying he's bad... I really thought he was going to be one the beat Calzaghe. But now, I just don't see that happening, Calzaghe is just too quick and has too much stamina for Kessler... For every jab Kessler will land, Calzaghe will have landed 4~5 punches...
Agreed. People look at guys like Kessler and Calzaghes records and sa **** like "who have they faught", maybe they would know if they actually watched (or followed) the division. Just because you haven't heard of them doesnt mean they are crap.
Don't hold your breath there. If Calzaghe beats Kessler I expect him to fight Hopkins at light heavyweight.
I've been guilty of the same thing... I've based my opinion on a few fights I saw of Calzaghe (against Chris Eubanks, Mario Veit, Omar Shika). To which I saw Veit as ****, Shika as gatekeeper, and Eubanks as past his prime... Then, when combined that with the general disrespect of Calzaghe here on esb, I figured he couldn't be that great... But, I was wrong... I had a hard time finding the Calzaghe/Salem fight, where Joe got knocked down once in the fight... I figured that Joe didn't have a great chin, since I don't regard Salem as a great puncher... But when I finally was able to download the fight this summer, I saw it was a perfect shot flush on Calzaghe's chin. But, Calzaghe got back right up nonetheless and continued outpunching his opponent like nothing happened... in my books, this proves that a fighter got a heart. After that, against Bika, I saw Calzaghe taking a straight right power punch right on the chin on the 5th round (a shot that would have put any boxer in trouble) not even disturbing him. Instead, Calzaghe just pointed to his chin, and challenged Bika to hit him again... To me, a boxer who can outpunch anybody, outwork anybody, has great accuracy, has great dodging skills, combined with a good chin, is, IMO, almost unbeatable and deserve to be viewed as a ATG.
This is great to hear lads. Unfortunately, you've kind of missed his best years. A bit early to call him an ATG - that's yet to be seen. Undoubtedly, he has all the natural talent in the world. Although he's slowed physically in the last couple of years, he's improved in his movements he makes, picks his punches better, speed of thought is superb and is no longer as rash and brash as he once was.
Real boxing fans know their ****, even if they don't personally like a boxer they can show/admit respect.
