To all those who believe p4p = h2h/weight, please give me your opinions...

For months I have tried to combat these idiotic threads about how "Calzaghe could beat Pac if they were the same size" or how "Pac would KO Calzaghe if they were the same size", not specifically regarding these two fighters (but I chose them as statements like the two I've quoted seem to be being thrown around an awful lot of late) but just the completely irrational, illogical, impossible, insane, and downright dumb view that 'pound-for-pound h2h' (?) is who would win between two fighters if they were the same size.

For months I have typed my hands sore trying to explain why this is ludicrous to those who say it, writing passages about the origins of the term, what it means, how it works, etc etc - but still the uneducated masses clog up our forum with this embarrassing manure.

So, I'm trying a different tactic now, a short sharp example that should hopefully highlight how ridiculous this concept is:

People are often saying Calzaghe (a lhw) would beat Pac (a lw-ww) or vice-versa, so by the same principle these people must also be able to decide who would win between peak Lennox Lewis and peak Ricardo Lopez, so the question is:

    - 5ft 2in and 98lbs version of Lewis vs peak Lopez

    or

    - 6ft 5in and 245lbs version of Lopez vs peak Lewis

Which do you think of to decide who would win? Would the result of these two possibilities definitely be the same?? :nut

I live in hope that this thread means that just one person sees the light that this is NOT what pound-for-pound means and that these h2hs are NOT things that can or should ever be considered by a sensible boxing fan.

    :bbb

If Manny Pacquiao was a 168lb, he'd effectively be a different fighter.

Those sort of comments hold no weight.

why are you trying to impose your views and meaning, instead of just letting people decide for themselves.

i know we live in a nanny state where the govt trys to control our every thought and opinions , yet when we come onto the WWW people should be free from being told what and how to think.

p4p should not be taken seriously.

Control our every thought and opinions?! Who are you really - Fox Mulder or Howard Hughes? Pound-for-pound does have a definition, it is not imagining a 6ft 5in 245lbs man shrunk down to a midget fighting another midget, it is not being the "Thought Police" to point out this common and absurd misconception.

    Good post!

I see the point you are making, but what exactly is the definition of p4p...it seems to have different meanings to different people...

It can be done to a certain extent. For example comparing Pac to Calzaghe:

Speed - Both are as fast as each other.
Power - I think p4p this is easy to guage, just see how it shows against their opponents. Pac.
    etc etc.

Now with picturing them I dont either picture a giant Pac or a small Calzaghe, all I do is just imagine both the same size but carrying the same advantage/disadvantages in their attributes. For example I think a fight with Pac vs Calzaghe would be a mid-rage distance war, Calzaghes slaps vs Pac's bombs and I think Pac KO's Calzaghe. A prime Bernard Hopkins however I think would have a good chance of UD Pac because if they still hold their attributes, BHop's chin would be the antidote to Pac's power and his style will offset Pac. Kinda like how JMM did except Bernard wont fall.

HW's like Lewis are hard to do because their not limited by weight division. For example, Lewis is a very tall HW... now a very tall WW would be lanky but Lewis sure aint lanky...thats cos he can be both tall and big as there's no weight limit. The closest I can get to is someone like DLH at 140lb, a genuinely big JWW but with Lewis attributes. Very good HW power so compare it to a very good JWW power, perhaps something like Tsyzu, good jab etc with average chin, something like Hattons.

This is precisely why such a debate holds no weight.

If Manny was the same size as Calzaghe, he wouldn't have the same attributes as he does as a 135lb fighter. He would not be as lightning quick, and he probably wouldn't pack the same punch, so how can we serious assess how the fight would go. It's stupid.

But were not imagining Pac moving up to 168lb and carrying that speed. No were are imagining he was a natural 168lb which has the same attributes he had at 135, in "relative terms". For example, if he was the 2nd hardest puncher in 135, I would compare his punch to the second hardest pncher at 168. If he was the fastest LW, I would compare his speed to the fastest at 168. He wont be in a 168 body with 135 speed, it'll be relative speed.

So by this logic, we can assess how good a fighter is amongst his peers equal to his weight and assess how good he would be if he had those same "advantages in those attributes" at 168 as he did in 135.

    It makes no sense.

Why can't fans just support their fighter through and through without talking such **** as that. No wonder Mijares was slated after losing to Vic.

This doesn't work either, because certain divisions are simply stronger than others.

If a guy like Ricardo Lopez, who was the best in virtually every category because he fought in a very weak division, is considered in a P4P sense in the "relative terms" you're referring to, he couldn't be legitimately considered the #1 fighter in every category at higher weights as well simply because there is so much more opposition to consider at higher weights, so the comparison wouldn't be fair.

I have to go with Selfkill and against Dangerousity on this one, it makes no sense at all and simply cannot be done.

I think you can compare attributes relatively, but its quite bizarre to be literally matching guys up.
