Friend @sasto has a point, though. Seems to me the first Caleb knew of the knife was when blubberguts reached for it.

With that said, I don't think he was looking to lay the animal out, just domesticate him 'til he could defuse the situation. He tries to talk him into squashing it once or twice. Blubberguts wasn't man enough to just bump fists, let some petty BS slide and go on with his day, and he saw he was on a losing streak with the hands, so the blade came out.

 

He actually looks like a fat slob with diabetes tbh.
