There's no standing 8 count allowed in Championship fights today. I just saw the replay, the ref could have at least motioned for Quillen to come to him though before stopping it. So a tad early to me. He probably would have been gone with another punch anyway, but...

The only outcome I see happening next is Jacobs ramming him with a loaded straight right and knocking him out, cold.

Quillin didn't look like in a position where could defend himself any longer.

    Kovalev, Sillakh for reference.

There was no Knockdown or holding when the ref stopped the action. The ref hesitates realises in that moment " o sh*t I messed up and allowed Quillin to recover", and might have people criticism him for trying to give him a standing 8 count... You can't tell me he stopped it to deliver a standing count, its not allowed in championship bouts. THe ref acted like he forgot that. So when he looks back and sees Quillin was still wobbly and hurt he impulsively immediately tries to alleviate his nerves and fix his mistake with another one by calling the fight.

That ref is just very lucky that Quillin wasn't more ****ed after to have people now taking his side. As to why thats debateable, he may never have had ambitions to be a great champion, juts wanted to earn a nice payday here and there for his family. Or he may not have liked what he saw from Jacobs, or may have been concussed. But as i already evaluated the guy does not like getting hit based off his past performances.

But by in all deserving respect that was a **** stoppage and a **** ref.

Yeah. I was hoping for a longer more competitive fight. But, the dude was about to get laid out. He should've tied Jacobs up or just took a knee. Maybe he just wasn't lucid enough to do either. And the ref obviously recognized that.

The guy didn't know where he was, on jelly legs. If the ref hadn't stopped it he would have been badly hurt. Smart stoppage from the ref

This badly hurt stuff is going overboard. But I see it repeated all the damn time.
It usually takes a LOT for someone to get badly hurt in a ring and even then it's an exceedingly rare occurrence. Let them fight FFS.

He was done though. Swaying about on his feet. One more punch and he was out. I don't need to see a man unconscious to know he lost a boxing match.
If that's your thing then fair enough

It can and does happen though plus some damage is done even when guys don't end up with life threatening injuries.

They usually do let them fight. What they don't like to let is somebody take unnecessary punishment because they are unable to defend themselves.

Quillin should have taken a knee. By not taking a knee he put himself in a position to lose the fight on a TKO as he did because the ref did not have the luxury of utilizing a standing eight count which would have been very appropriate under the circumstance. With no standing eight count and a fighter with too much pride to take a knee, we get a stoppage loss. I'm sure they will be rematching next year.
