I know it's an unpopular opinion, but that's just how I feel. I'm a firm believer that p4p credentials have to be renewed on a fairly regular basis. I'm not the type of guy to say well "he had that one great win 4 years ago" and then place that in my judgement. And right now Usyk is a 31 year Undisputed Cruiserweight Champion riding high at the pinnacle of his career. So here and now in 2018 he is in my opinion the world's best pound for pound fighter. I suppose there are other contenders for that title. GGG is ring magazine's p4p #1, but they always treat the pound for pound lists as a lifetime achievement award instead of an honest assessment of a fighter's current abilities. GGG in 2013 would have some argument, but considering Usyk's superior opposition and sublime skills he really wouldn't. How about Terrence Crawford? I'm not really a big fan of the guy. But he has pretty much dominated everybody he has faced. He's also a 3 division champ and was undisputed at 140. The problem is his resume is thin. He would be my #3 p4p. Then there is Lomachenko who at 30 years old is at the pinnacle of his career as well. And he's armed with a better resume than Crawford. He would be my #2 p4p. #1 is Usyk. I was in awe of his performance against Gassiev. Best performance I've seen in years. He had an off night against Breidis, but was never in any real danger of losing the fight. I don't think anybody in the stacked 200 pound division can beat the guy. I'm eager to see how he does at HW. He beats a top HW and this discussion is pretty much over for me. Usyk's speed, movement, positioning, skill and stamina are incredible. A guy that big with his attributes is extremely rare. And it's that combination that makes him p4p for me. Who would have thought a couple years back that boxing's most amazing fighter would crawl out of the hole that is boxing's ******* division? And become such a tremendous talent that he would overcome all the negative stereotypes about the CW division.
Well I'm partial stylistically to aggressive fighters with a punch. Usyk isn't necessarily a hard puncher nor does he sit down fully on punches all that much. But he does have a high workrate and looks to land a lot which I like. But I can see beyond my own stylistic biases for personal entertainment. I'm a bigger Gassiev fan. But Usyk is p4p.
I figured uysk would be great, but he did something special he won every single belt (not regular an interim get outta here belt mark!!) no exaggeration but Uysk might go down as THE best CW of all time. maybe he's already there.
Love Usyk and think that he will win a heavyweight belt, but we ought to give the PfP honor to someone who has already won belts in multiple divisions.
Definitely has a legit argument for the #1 spot! It’s between him and Loma. But after Usyk moves north and wins the titles up there... he’ll have the #1 spot on lockdown.
p4p cam be a bit annoying sometimes. All I know if for CW Uysk is top 5 of all time already at the very least.
I ain’t mad at that, he is no.2 on mine. If and when he beats Bellew I’m gunna make him no.1, depending on who Crawford fights next.
If your criteria is like that, I would have chosen Inoue as no.1 Style, power, youth, look, chin, skill and also resume. He's also mixing it up with the very best bantams now.
I'd pick quality of opponents over multiple division accolades. Take Crawford for example. 3 weight world champion in 2 of the weakest divisions then picks up a belt off arguably the weakest champion in Horn. I'd take what Usyk has done over that and in half the fights.
He is a prodigious talent and for me he has the best foot work of any fighter in any division, his movement and use of angles is superb. You could argue he doesn't have the accomplishments yet to be number 1 but on actual ability and skill he's up there with the very best P4P. Personally I have him number 1 too.
hes done great early on but its difficult to rate him above other multititlists who have been at it for a good while.
P4P is about skill and ability not winning belts in multiple classes. Undisputed champion of a division surely outranks grabbing one or two belts in 2-3 divisions -- especially in a deep division.
