To those criticizing pac-- you can't really have it both ways.

Being popular overseas means nothing if the prizefighters aren't getting a penny from any of their fights being shown throughout the world.

Pacquiao profile is way up since DLH.

In the last year, especially. See, e.g. 60 minutes.

The average fan can be sold anything. You can convince them that no-hopers have a chance if you market it properly.

I agree with the difficulty in determining the raw numbers and the Clottey fight was a good attempt- hadn't thought of that. The Hatton fights would probably make a better direct comparison even though he picked up a defeat before facing pac but again, there are some lurking variables.

The DLH one is one I steadfastly disagree with though. DLH-PBF was the first showing of 24/7 which is IMO the biggest factor.
Also Pre PBF although losing to Hopkins, he stopped Mayorga in emphatic fashion.
Pre Pac although losing to PBF he beat Steve Forbes but only by UD.
For the Floyd fight, both fighters were considered in "better" fighting weights, and viewed more seriously, that DLH could dent the record of an undefeated.
For the Pac fight it was considered that neither were at their best weight, and that DLH was gonna show up to bully a small asian.

Some other variables include that the circumstance is a little different between the two. Although both had just got done schooling their B+ opponents, Floyd was publicly considering retirement.

    etc etc

Another would be the timing of the year- I just noticed that Floyd is very consistent with fighting in the 4th-6th month of the year as well as the 11-12th month of the year, giving credence to actual planning. Pac's is more sporadic.

Anyways this digresses from the original point I made that it is moot to say one fighter is making more than the other with the same opponent, and use the shotness in one argument (ATGness) and disregard it in another (raw draw power).

Even non-casual fans will settle for any piece of garbage coming their way. Remember all the threads over on the scene and even some on ESB about how marg was going to pull off an upset?

You bring up a good point though. The average fan sees greater size and automatically thinks that makes the opponent the biggest threat. emmanuel knows how to play the he big, I small angle very well. Most people don't know that it's intelligence, skills, styles, and athleticism that wins fights.

To an extent I see your point-

But in my eyes there is a difference between a man selling someting and a customer wanting to buy something..

One thing I just remembered general wealth around the U.S. was peaking right around 2007, and in 2008 it had all gone to **** by the end of the year if anyone remembers all the corporate layoffs and stuff... I don't have any raw stats but you can just look at the 5 yr charts on the S&P and Dow

EDIT: this is in reference to the respective DLH fights lol

the same can be said about your hero. the big difference is that he's made a career out of it. cherrypicking a bloated jmm, and lower level opponents such as corley, brussels, michell, ndou, baldomir, etc. certainly don't help your legacy any. and him taking his first "vacation" to avoid fighting cotto, margo and a prime mosley adds to this.

as for pac, margo and clottey are certainly not pushovers. they are two of the top five welters this past 5 years together w/ cotto, mosley and mayweather. that means pac has already fought and beaten 3 of these 5. mayweather definitely can't claim that.

and for your info, pac-margo had higher PPV numbers than the pac-hatton fight.

and "my hero" does greater numbers even though he gets less love and exposure. emmanuel can't out-Floyd Floyd.

Does it make your AZZ hurt to see a "career cherry picker" do better than someone who just recently started to cherry pick?

yep. the pac-dlh fight happened right smack in the middle of the US recession while the dlh-mayweather fight was held during an economic boom for the US.

Tunnelvision much? It means everything to HBO who owns those broadcasting rights. Fighters get PPV revenues domestically but HBO is a multinational company and they reap the profits everywhere else...you think they give a **** if the fighters dont get a share of the rest of that money? You think Sky SPorts just get to freely broadcast hbo fights? Being popular overseas, especially if a certain demographic...hell a whole continent is a captive market is probably just as important to HBO as it is domestically. At the end of the day, HBO's primary motive is for them to make as much money as possible.....the fighter's purse isnt nearly as important. In fact, if they can get away with it HBO would want to pay the fighters the smallest possible amount. A fighter who can draw hundreds of millions overseas adds to the total revenue a PPV event generates. Just because you dont see it translate to a fighter's purse is totally irrelevant.

you are comparing a non-american (filipino) and an american when it comes to American HBO PPV numbers?! :patsch

maybe it would be more fair to compare them in total PPVs sold worldwide, right?

can you name another non-american fighter who generates PPV numbers close to what american mayweather does in American HBO PPV? i guess not.

Cool story. Too bad HBO publically stated that Floyd is their cash cow in a press conference for May-Mos.

The American media loves emmanuel moar than they love their own. Does Floyd, the guy who flagged FOR THE STATES during the '96 ATLANTA Olympics, get access to older White America by being AZZked to endorsed a politician and going onto 60 mins? The pinoy media cares to put up "bad things" about emmanuel like his extra woman, the America media doesn't do that. The American media makes a deal out of Floyd's random personal life **** like Floyd punching a *****, but the American media does not showcase the fact that emmanuel is being sued by two American entities right now for breaching contracts

Too bad, this is always said, but there's not actual numbers to show anything. When they both fought Hatton, Floyd broke the UK PPV record. emmanuel trailed behind Floyd in the UK.
