To those who say "Jones should've fought Eubank/Benn/Collins"...

This is correct although Roy never really seemed to want any fight even though whatever he chose was his at the time. Won't call Roy a ducker he was a supreme talent but anyone who doesn't say he picked and fought who he wanted when he wanted is completely ******ed.

Ward isn't The Man at all, not yet. He hasn't beaten better fighters than his main rival, Froch, has.

Jones was the p4p#1, and had beaten Hopkins and Toney by the time he was a smw champ. He was well ahead of Eubank etc at that time.

And look at it another way:

Jones stayed in the USA, but he won mw gold in 93, smw gold in 94, lhw gold in 97, unified lhw titles in 98, and unified lhw titles again in 99.

Calzaghe stayed in the UK, and he won smw gold in 97, and unified in... 06???

    That's the difference.

Jones stayed at home, and won world titles in 3 divisions within 4 years, and unified the 3 major belts of a division within 2 years of being in that division.

Calzaghe stayed at home defending a WBO belt for 9 years.

Its an interesting debate imo about staying at home, would calzaghe have done more if he had been born american due to more oppurtunitys there? would Jones have done less if he had been born in Uk?. Its all hypothetical ofc but do some fighters let their careers be almost pre written just by the fact of where they are born ( Those that refuse to Travel much).

    The post is abit jibberish.

The paths all crossed back in '89, when Nunn, Jones Jr and Eubank were all ringside at Benn-Watson. Jones Jr had just got his NBC contract and they were about to offer Benn one, too (Benn-Watson was live on NBC). Though Arum wanted to build Nunn-Benn.

Watson tore that up. And then Jones Sr took his son off NBC and hid him away in Pensacola, after seeing Benn's fall.

Eubank came into the script by beating Benn and Watson and earning the most outside the heavyweights with a massive non-American platform and sold-out arenas. Jones Jr wanted in on that act, and with Eubank stating at the end of '92 that he wanted Nunn and Toney in '93 before getting out, Jones Jr felt there was no reason for Eubank to turn down a fight with him - if Eubank won, great, and if he lost, he still had Nunn and Toney to fight. It would've given Eubank an American platform, too. But no, Eubank digs up Lindell Holmes from the graveyard instead of fighting Jones Jr in an exciting barnburner.

Benn came back into it by fighting Eubank again, holding the WBC version and signing for Don King.

Nunn lost. Jones Jr beat Toney. Benn beat McClellan. Benn called out Jones Jr. Eubank lost to Collins. Collins called out Jones Jr and Benn.

Nunn? Benn chose McClellan when Nunn was his mandatory! King paid Nunn off.

Benn was looking shot. Collins beat Eubank again. Eubank retired. Benn was still calling out Jones Jr, and vice-versa.

King offers Benn and Jones Jr $25,000,000 each and Jones Jr turns it down. Jones Jr's team offer Benn $10,000,000 and Benn turns it down, citing that he'd have to pay it all back to King in court.

Benn's contract with King runs out on Malinga fight, which he lost, then retired.

Benn against Jones Jr is a mismatch anyway. Benn is shot. Boohoo.

Collins beats Benn twice and calls out Jones Jr until 1999, when he collapses in sparring with Howard Eastman.

Eubank makes his comeback and calls out Jones Jr for the first time. Jones Jr wants nothing of him. Eubank claims today that Jones Jr didn't want to fight him.

Nunn becomes Jones Jr's mandatory, and Jones Jr gives up the title. Jones Jr officially ducked Nunn.

Eubank is offered a Jones Jr fight in mid-99, which he turns down.

Nunn goes to prison and Benn becomes a preacher. Watson, told he'd never walk again after Eubank hurt him, walks the London marathon.

McClellan remains mostly blind, deaf and wheelchair-bound.

    Jones Jr still fights.

    Toney still eats.

Eubank has Eubank Jr about to turn pro.

Collins priced himself out of the Jones Jr fight.

I'd like to have seen him fight Lamar Parks or Reggie Johnson at middle, Tim Littles at super-middle, and certainly Nunn at light-heavy (or even super-middle).

Jones Jr against Collins is a mismatch.

The McClellan fight fair enough was being built, and what a fight it would've been 'when' it happened.

I agree RJJ-Collins would've been a mismatch due to the speed disparity, but I don't see Nunn as being a legitimate threat to Jones in the mid-late 90s at all.

Beating liles and benn at smw would clearly benefit his resume.

    Same with jackson at mw.

But if there is just one man we can force jones to take on in history, it's dm. That is the main missing fight from his resume.

These 4 victories probably jump him a good few places on any p4p list.

When Eubank came out of semi retirement in 96 he asked Jones for a fight. Jones knocked him back saying: "Eubank has lost twice to Collins so he is no good to me now."

Nunn tried to get Jones in the ring on three occasions:
1: At smw after his loss to Liles he would approach Jones about a fight
2: He tried to force a fight by becoming his mando at lhw-Jones vacated the belt to avoid him
3: After his loss to Graciano and Jones would turn him down again

    Benn
King promised the winner of Benn-McClellan a fight with Jones. Benn won. Benn called for the fight throughout 95. Team Jones said King wanted options, Frank ****** said:" How do they know what we want? We have heard nothing from their camp."

    Collins
Jones wanted too large a purse split, so Collins had to turn it down

Jones is definitely a ducker then.

He wouldn't fight Eubank and Nunn when they were coming off losses, he wanted the lion's share of the purse vs Collins when he was p4p#1 and Collins was a WBO smw champ fighting in Ireland, and he didn't fight Benn when Benn was really pushing the issue by fighting Vincenzo Nardiello and Danny Perez in London.

    Cheers for clearing that up.

I never posted my opinion, just the facts:
    Jones on Eubank

    Jones talks Nigel Benn:

    Collins:

If Collins accepted that offer then the chances are he would of got paid nothing. Like Jones got nothing when he accepted a similar deal to fight Hopkins II
Those guys were his mandatorys. Negotiations were going no where. So he kept fighting, hoping they could come to some kind of agreement

I am aware you were posting the truth.

As I said, Jones is definitely a ducker on this basis. Definitely.

this was before Joe became drastically overated. you think Jones Jr would come over to fight in some barn in wales or england. Calzaghe only turned into a star after lacy, kessler etc wasnt even the main man at smw till ottke came to end of his career.

Also british public didnt give a toss about joe when lewis and hamed were active. im northern irish was due to see Calzaghe brian magee before he pulled out in belfast wasnt any interest at all in this fight, nobody in belfast knew who Joe was.
