Gerald McClellan was a murderous puncher, promoted by Don King. Does anyone really believe Jones would have fought him?

It's interesting though because Whitaker was 'lb4lb' in '94-'95, Oscar in '97, Mosley in '00 and Hopkins in '02.

It's all mythical magazine crap anyway

No he wasn't, Jones was probably a harder puncher. McClellan's record is as manufactured as hell. His chin was probably better than his punch power.

Jones was an extremely strong puncher but even he admitted McClellan punched harder than everyone.

The facts don't lie for a start - the only man to KD Sanderline Williams, the only man to KD John Mugabi three times, the only man to KD Julian Jackson, the only man to KD Nigel Benn twice. He knocked out Mugabi in a round, Jackson in a round, and Benn through the ropes in 30 seconds. He knocked out granite-chinned Gilbert Baptist - who went 12 with a murderous Hopkins - in a round. 20 1st-round KO's and WBC champ with multiple defenses at age 26 is insane.

Then there's the eye that doesn't lie. He clearly had extremely heavy hands, delivered with amazing timing. The left hook to the body was his best punch and accounted for most of the KD's in his career - sneaky, snappy, pinpoint.

Not that magazine crap matters, but Jackson was lb4lb #8 and #1 at middleweight when he fought McClellan.

And Jones Jr was the lb4lb #10, before he even became world champion.

Before Jones Jr even fought Toney, he was the lb4lb #3 - McClellan was lb4lb #7, yet #1 at middle ahead of Jones Jr.

    Go figure

He knocked out good fighters with poor chins and mediocre fighters, some, like Baptist, were last minute opponents. He proved nothing, other than his ability to take shots from big punchers while delivering his own. I'm pretty sure his boxing ability is actually underrated though. You make it sound like knocking down a past-prime Benn twice is some kind of monumental achievement....

He outboxed Littles, Liles and Moorer in '87 and out-slugged Jones Jr in '88. He also outboxed Sanderline Williams which proved diffiicult for everyone.

For years Calzaghe was almost unheard of in boxing. Decent enough boxer, but zero high profile or big money fights until near the end. Durings RJJs time, Calzaghe was barely big enough news. He never signed on to fight the top guys at that time anyway.

The big British global fighter in the 90s was Lennox Lewis. Benn and Eubank were more like Frank Bruno in comparison. Both good fighters, but not world famous or marquee names in the US. Eubank, I believe never went state side anyway. I'm not sure that either really pushed for Jones Jr, Toney, McCullum, etc.

Benn and Eubank were not huge for SMWs, these days you need to be 6ft2. If a guy fights at heavyweight he needs at least some balls, sure both are talented but I doubt Jones Jr is running scared. Its more about the financial side of things.

The Milton loss was to be expected. How do you put a 21-year-old kid with no rounds under his belt in with an experienced slickster like Milton? Steward wasn't even in his corner - he was holding the pads for Dennis Andries in the dressing room.

Steward didn't even train Gerald for his next fight, he was too busy preparing Tommy for Leonard. He had some fat unknown called Willie Brown training him. However he did drop Ralph Ward, who just went the distance with Terry Norris, in the 2nd round, and claimed to have grossly over-trained for Ward.

For the record, Milton beat Iran Barkley, Michael Nunn, Frank Tate and Reggie Johnson in the amateurs, and went on to beat Michael Olajide in a WBC eliminator after McClellan.

He wouldn't have a problem with Benn, Collins, Liles or Michalczewski.

But Eubank and Nunn he even admitted himself in '93 he'd have more problems with than Toney would present him.

Reggie Johnson at middle back then would've given him a lot of problems, too.
