To those who think HBO "bought judges" in past Taylor fights......

Right, becaue entire fights should be judged on one sequence of punches. Chances are that Lennox was calming Lampley down during another one of his tourette syndrome commentating outbursts, and that the judges noticed that those punches weren't landing.

If the judges noticed those punches weren't landing, they wouldn't have scored the fight the way they did. Taylor was done after the fifth because he was punched out by Pavlik, not because he was punched out from the second round. Pavlik's defense is much better than he gets credit for. This isn't the freaking Olympics. Simply touching some one with a glove doesn't mean crap. The point is 'clean, effective punches'. But even in that catagory, the compubox or computer crap count or whatever they call it does't justify the scoring on the judges cards.

Giving round 1 to Taylor is ugly, but he should have his ****ing eyes poked out for giving JT round 3atsch

I scored it this way:
10-9 pav
10-8 jt
10-9 pav
10-9 jt
10-9 jt
10-9 pav

Rounds 4-6 were hard to score because they were very close, but I have watched the fight NINE TIMES, and it comes out the same every time.

Taylor vs. Pavlik Round by Round Commentary & Full Undercard Report

Ring Entrances: Kelly Pavlik entered the ring to heavy metal music and massive cheering. Jermain Taylor entered to rap music and loud booing.

There was no mistaking the pro-Pavlik crowd, as “Team Pavlik” shirts and Youngstown, OH banners were spotted all throughout Boardwalk Hall.

Round 1

Taylor opened the round with a hard right hand over the top. Taylor pumped his jab several times, and he showed superior hand speed, especially with his lead left. Pavlik landed two or three decent right hands, but Taylor controlled the tempo.

Round 2

Taylor’s strong left hand and hand speed were apparent in this frame. Taylor caught Pavlik with a right hand and a left hook sent him to his knees for a knockdown. Pavlik popped up quickly, but his legs were unsteady. He did not lift his gloves up for the referee, Steve Smoger, but he walked toward him, and Smoger allowed the fight to continue. Pavlik held on for dear life, and Taylor sent a grazing right to the top of Pavlik’s head. Pavlik stumbled halfway across the ring, but then he miraculously regained his composure. By the end of the round, Pavlik appeared steady.

Round 3

Pavlik came out for round three as if he never suffered a knockdown in round two. Pavlik corralled Taylor into the corner on two occasions, and he did his most effective work when he was not in the center of the ring. Taylor has a habit of backing into the ropes, and Pavlik is most effective there. Pavlik landed a hard left-right combination that reawakened the crowd, and when it was replayed on the overhead jumbotron, the crowd gasped with approval. The Youngstown crowd was back into the fight, and Pavlik had his best round so far.

Round 4

Pavlik began landing his jab more effectively, but he could not keep Taylor on the ropes. The one time that Taylor was trapped, he effectively countered his way out. This was in stark contrast to Taylor’s past fights, and it appeared he worked hard on moving his hands when he was backed up.

Round 5

Taylor doubled up his jab and landed a nice left hook to close the three-punch left handed combination. Taylor’s speed was apparent in person, and he clearly beat Pavlik to the punch on several occasions. Taylor began controlling the tempo in the center of the ring, and he only fell into the ropes once but again countered out.

Round 6

Taylor’s left hand became most effective in this round, as he landed jabs and hooks. Pavlik’s determination and conditioning showed up here, and he continued to walk Taylor down. At the bell Taylor looked a little winded.

Round 7

Pavlik continued to stalk Taylor, but he could not trap him in the corner with the jab. Pavlik’s jab picked up steam in the last two rounds however, and he began landing more effectively. Finally, about two-thirds of the way through the round, Pavlik landed a monstrous straight right hand to Taylor’s chin that backed the champion into the blue corner, Pavlik’s corner. Pavlik moved in and landed a crunching left uppercut, and when Taylor stayed up, Pavlik obliged him with a right uppercut. Taylor was effectively out on his feet, but Pavlik threw punches until referee Smoger stopped the bout, and Taylor slumped down in the corner.

Pavlik wins by TKO at 2:14 of round 7 and becomes the new champion.

Aftermath & HBO Recap

I scored the fight in person as 5-1 Taylor (with a two point round for round 2), going into the last round. My scorecard mirrored Judge Julie Lederman’s card exactly.

When I went home and watched the fight on HBO, I was surprised that Harold Lederman and Larry Merchant scored the bout so differently. Further, I was shocked that Emmanuel Steward told Taylor that he was behind in the fight. That advice proved costly as Taylor was ahead on all three scorecards when he was knocked out. Taylor was the more accurate puncher, and he was much quicker, however, Pavlik had that extra gear that made him the champion. The bout was spectacular on television, but it was 100% better in person.

No need to read beyond what this ******* said about round 1. Obviously another JT nuthugger with a drool bib and a hockey helmet. Round 1 WASN'T EVEN CLOSE. Even Emmanuel Steward gave it to Pavlik. Moreover, anyone who knows anything about either fighter knows that they were fighting at Pavlik's pace NOT Taylor's! ****ing ******.
