Always felt that Biggs had the talent to develop into a very good fighter but thrown in early against prime Tyson, it totally ruined him.
Biggs was not ready. I just don't think Biggs was very good. He did well for a minute and I remember he was hit in the body and just stopped.
One of Mike's best performances that doesn't get mentioned much. Biggs was good too, but I ask, what was he ever going to be in the era of Tyson dominance. Then the next shift in the division was the 90's with many good and great heavyweights on the scene.
If he'd had come along a few years earlier, he'd have probably picked up a belt. Maybe even defended it a few times. But his lifestyle problems would have caught up with him eventually. Maybe been on the same level as a dokes or Thomas. But put in to early against a peak Tyson.
Some folks were buying into the Biggs chances. He was a popular fighter and Main Events at that time was a powerhouse. And he was their heavyweight prospect and they had a ton of success with a bunch of guys on their roster. And there just weren't many heavyweight prospects from that 1984 olympics era that had developed. Lots of other folks thought it was a mismatch. The casual boxing fan had seen the Tyson ko's and had seen very few bouts of Biggs. but if you'd seen Biggs' previous efforts in his 2 or 3 fights leading up to the Tyson fight, I sure do not understand how you would have liked the guys chances. Tyrell's defense was going to be tested by Tyson. And he held that chin way up in the air and held those hands low. He didn't bring them back to their proper position after punching. So the Duva team took their chances on a big payday with a Tyson match. But Biggs could have easily been stopped by other top notch competition at the time so why have him ko'd for $50k on an undercard bout against a Bruno/Tucker/etc. So they took their chances on the Tyson sweepstakes for big money and a title shot. But Biggs could fight Tyson 10x and he still doesn't win once with that defense of his.
Biggs had potential, from what I read, he was forecasted as a possible ATG. Yeah but his lifestyle would've caught up with him and that beating he took from Tyson didn't help.
I read that he beat Tyson in the amateurs for the SHW spot on the Olympic team. That's when Tyson tried for the HW spot and lost to Henry Tilman. But instead of being a gracious winner like Tilman, Biggs rubbed it in and Tyson never forgot it...
