I was just wondering if the negotiations for the big fights like: Hoya/Trinidad, Leonard/Hearns, Hagler/Leonard, Ali/Frazier etc. was as complicated and god damn idiotic as todays big fights like: Pacquiao/Mayweather or Haye/K2?

Please try not to make this a hate thread :thumbsup

You have to remember most big fights from the past involved Don King in some way, he had some say in most big fights back then.

So you mean it's the promoters who's bad at working with another promoter, rather than it's the fighter and their teams?

Not saying that, King seemed to have a way of doing things that pleased everyone, promoters, fighters etc. Some fights he wasnt even promoter in but still managed to have some involvement in organising fights and getting a cut.

Doubt it. Too much money and ego's being thrown around nowadays. Both by fighters and promoters.

There was a time when if Don King or Bob Arum said "this needs to happen," it usually happened. Now days we have eighty bazillion promoters all trying to keep their money makers making money.

There was a time when boxing fans knew who the champ was. Even when guys like Danny Lopez and Alexis Arguello failed to unify their respective divisions we still knew who the boss was. Now days we have four major sanctioing bodies, and they all have ridiculous ranking systems. The silly ass mandatories, and the glut of world titles make it possible for a title holder to fight a "ranked contender" 3 times a year for years, but never face anyone who belongs in the real top five.

All of the above conspires to make it possible and profitable for the best to avoid the best. It's a sad situation, but the amazing amount of detailed information that is available in the current "information age" makes the situation seem worse than it actually is.

Guess so. Hmm guess the perception of King has changed over the years too. Seem to remember people disliking him like the pest lol:lol:

Yeah, but like him or not, he got big fights made that may not have happened if not for him.

I think the big difference is not the negotiations but the theatre that is presented to us as negotiations through the press. Most of what we read is written as PR and does not present reality.

The boxers likely aren't even involved. They rely on their handlers to say if a deal is good or bad and I doubt they've changed much over the years.

Part of the problem is that there are a lot more revenue streams these days and thus more to negotiate. Once upon a time, you only had to worry about the live gate and maybe radio or TV rights.
