I don't want to argue that boxers of those era trained harder. I doubt it, but it's possible.

But to me it's hard to believe this is a welterweight matchup. It looks more like a heavyweight fight after the 10th round. The speed, ducking and clinching is just bad. Look how Barney Ross jabs, it's horrible.

No after watching this I must believe that a present day Ricky Hatton could've beaten them all. The sport must have evolved since. Even if it's just till the 50's or 60's.

Yes, well I can believe that.

But people don't have to tell me that nonsense about fighters being better in those days. It isn't true. You can obviously see that these fighters are not the same quality as fighters of today.

Same with a lot of other sports. A lot of the old school basketbal fans can't accept that the American dreamteam basketball players of 1992 are amateurs compared to those of 2008. Sorry Jordan.

Well tell me then, who today is better than Barney Ross around his weight??

TimesEyes (2 months ago) Show Hide 0 Marked as spam Reply | Spam
Cotto, Margarito, Williams to name three. I don't think it would've gone past the 3rd round either.

Margarito??Would Barney get to use plaster too or just Margarito??

TimesEyes (2 months ago) Show Hide 0 Marked as spam Reply | Spam
Well Barney could use plaster and Margarito not and Margarito would still knock him out before the end of the 5th.

The most similar WW today to Ross is Mayweather, similar skill set but Mayweather is more physically gifted, still such a great defense is unlikely to see him stopped and he is a better boxer than anyone other than FMJ.

However Barney is really no bigger than Marquez, both have the exact same dimensions and JMM comes in the ring weighing the same as Ross weighe. No one gives Marquez any chance at WW. Today's Welterweights with 24hour weigh ins are really middleweights of Ross's day. Look at the massive physical and strength advantages Williams, Margarito, Mosley and Cotto would all have, these men are allot bigger. Ross would be up against it

Regardless if Ross can beat them or not, I dont see any of todays Welterweights KNOCKING HIM OUT. We are talking about a top ten chin here. In the same class of Ali or Lamotta.

This is sheer Youtube nonsense :patsch

Barney Ross belonged to a bygone boxing era. 15 rounds fights, lighter boxing gloves, referees who wouldn't probably stop the fight unless you were already half-dead.

Barney thrived in that tough environment. He was a true warrior in and out the ring. The heart of a true champ. As it has been mentioned, he was never KOed. He even endured one of the worst beatings ever in the hand of Henry Armstrong, but refused to quit. He didn't went down and left the ring walking (well, kind of).

"Ross’ most courageous prize fight was his last, in 1938, against Henry Armstrong, the only man to hold the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight crowns. By the time he fought Armstrong, Ross — although only 28 years old —had fought almost 300 times. Although he started strong, Ross fired after the fourth round and Armstrong pummeled him at will. After the tenth round, the referee asked Ross if he wanted to stop, but the champion said no. After the twelfth, the referee approached Ross’ managers, asking them to throw in the towel, but, Ross told them, "You do that and I’ll never talk to you again. I want to go out like a champion." To Ross that meant standing on his feet when the final bell sounded, Through rounds thirteen, fourteen and fifteen, Armstrong pounded away at the exhausted Ross, who would not go down. Voices in the crowd pleaded with the referee to stop the fight, but he respected Ross’ wish to end his career never having failed to go the distance. In the last minute of the fight, Ross rallied and stood toe to toe with Armstrong, exchanging blows. The crowd was on its feet many with tears in their eyes, cheering for Ross, knowing they had seen the heart of a true champion."

It is simply ridiculous to think that Ross could be KOed by the likes of Margarito, Cotto et all. Defeated? Who knows?. But, KOed?, nope :bart

Hence the dilemna of youtube; for all it's usefulness, slack-jawed herberts are given a voice. Hoping for sense is like successfully training a ****** to be a butler in that it's never going to happen even though I hope it does one day.

Todays welterweights would have been middleweights (at least) in Ross' time.
