Anthony Joshua …… Tokyo douglas was more about what Tyson didn’t do in that fight !!!!!! Then what douglas did !!!!!! Both Joshua and douglas are quitters !!!! Both have yellow dog in them but I pick Joshua over Tokyo douglas !!
I do think that Tokyo Douglas was for one night only a fighter oh so many champions would have had a real challenge on their hands with, and possibly lost too if they were having a off night. AJ for all his success has at times shown a fragility (and for many of his fights a leaky gas tank), so i voted for one night only Tokyo Douglas to prevail.
Tokyo douglas vs Joshua from the first Ruiz fight? Douglas. He was extremely motivated in that fight and wasnt going to go out like a chump. Fact is, is that version of Douglas stands up to any Heavyweight great in any era. Now the Douglas from the Holyfield fight is a different story.
Douglas had a mean streak, excellent combination puncher, world class jab, thudding (not 1 punch ko) power, and weaknesses of questionable work ethic, cardio and passion for the sport. Douglas, for a short time and peaking in the Tyson fight, overcame his shortcomings. Buster firing on all cylinders as he was in Tokyo, would be competitive with anyone. He wouldn't beat everyone obviously and he may get blown out here and there, but I think he was enough to wilt Joshua over 12.
Take Tyson out of the fight visually and just look at how Douglas moved on that night. Douglas jabbed and moved, worked the body up and down while maintaining defensive responsibility. He was extremely fluid and had a great punch selection as well. The only version of Douglas that beats AJ is Tokyo Douglas and it would be by knock out.
Tokyo Douglas would beat current Joshua but as Joshua is mentally broken I don't think it's a fair comparison. Pre Vlad Joshua would be a lot more competitive although I would still favour Tokyo Douglas who for that night was super motivated.
Tokyo Douglas put it all together for one night. The guy had talent out this world but lacked discipline. But that night in Tokyo, I don’t know too many HWs who beating that guy. IMO it’s kinda like the Riddick Bowe argument. Me personally I know the skills he possessed but he only put it together one night where you was sure he would end up a Top 5 HW off all time. I always rate him right along with Douglas as I consider discipline a skill needed to be great and one that lacks discipline shouldn’t be graded on a curve.
Agreed, but to be fair, on the road to Tyson (after Tucker) Douglas was looking pretty good. I watched the Tucker, Jerry Halstead, Mike Williams, Trevor Berbick and Oliver McCall fights. Sometimes he would come in a little overweight, but he was looking pretty good in those fights too (obviously not on the level of Tokyo).
Correct that’s why i said the talent was there but putting all together including discipline was a tall order. Not many consider discipline a skill but it’s probably the most important skill.
