Cooney could've been something if he was managed to be the best fighter he could be and not just the biggest meal ticket possible. Frankly it's surprising he did as well as he did against Larry considering he was still inexperienced and coming off of a layoff, while Holmes was prime and motivated.

As an interesting side note, he was actually one of Holmes more experienced challengers. 11 of Larry's defenses came against guys with less than 25 fights. Of those 11, 8 of those guys didn't even have 20 fights when they fought him. Of that, 6 of Holmes' challengers didn't even have more than 15 fights.

Some guys fall apart after a loss, few more so than Gerry. He wasn't developed well, and I think emotionally he didn't really have what it takes. There were so many decent tests he could've taken, such as the aforementioned Weaver, but that didn't happen. He then went into part-time boxer mode, coming back only for fights against very dangerous dudes, such as Spinks and Foreman. Foolish as hell. And now David Haye will likely follow in his footsteps.

:smoke He also entered the fight with LARRY with an injured left shoulder because his retared trainer VICTOR had him hitting WALLS instaed of the heavy bag . He was grossly mismanaged and could have amounted to much more .

Can't find anyone in reality to defeat your worst nightmare so here come the fantasy match ups. A safe place where your imagination is in control

Don King did a great job keeping Cooney inactive, rusty and not ready to take on a prime Holmes. In 1982, how many fighters could have taken Holmes into the 13th rnd? Not many, but a rusty, inexperienced Gerry Cooney did it :good

I actually agree with OP, Cooney was far less robotic and had big power and woulda went to war with wlad as soon as the bell rang, Wlad would not be able to handle Cooney's early rushes

Cooney was a very good inside fighter too. He would rip that hook to the head or body from only 7 inches or so. I will say if that was Cooney in there last weekend against Haye when Haye was caught in a corner or up against the ropes like he was a few times in the fight he would not have got out against Cooney he would have been KOed.

Cooney was highly competitive against Holmes, one of the greatest champions of all time....he would be equally as competitive against either Klitchko....far more than any of the recent embarassments we have been witnessing.

Holmes is pretty far in front of Cooney and Wlad. Cooney was a legit 6'6" even when he was looking down at the staredown of the Holmes fight he was taller than Larry he was about 6'3"

    FACT
cooney was an accomplished amatuer, winning NY golden gloves titles and having over 50 wins and just a handfull of losses

    FACT
he was protected for a while

    FACT
he knocked out jimmy young, ron lyle, ken norton..1 round, 1 round and 4 rounds
whether they were shot or not, he finished them impressively

    FACT
he fought one of the best 3 champions ever and went 13 rounds...

    FACT
he underachieved.... but was a fighter who was game, had raw power, and gets a bad rap...mostly because he really never had the desire after the holmes fight to be a boxer anymore

"A right hand buckled the knees of Norton...by Gerry Cooney, the first punch of the fight"

Yeah he was a inexperienced bum with only a left hook.
