You never know. Meg Ryan pulled off being in the military in Courage Under Fire, which I never thought she could do. Al Pacino was a white guy and look at his classic Tony Montana role. If you look at a young Duran, he was a pretty handsome guy like Cruise. Put an accent and a beard on Cruise with a bit of attitude that he actually does have in real life, and it could work.

This is why I hate hollywood sometimes. They pander to the big-name actors. You want to tell me there is not an actor more suitable for the role than a guy who has nothing in common with Duran?
    Oh please.

Without those big name actors, these movies would not even get made at all. I don't know if you've noticed, boxing movies haven't been able to generate all that much revenue lately. Maybe we do need a movie that harkens back to boxing's roots like a film on John L. Sullivan.

I don't know about that. The Passion Of The Christ and Apocalypto did well, without a single star name. Different themes of course and I do get your point, but maybe if the film had a big name director like Gibson at the helm it may not need a star-studded cast.

Actually, since Gibson is a fight fan himself, maybe he should consider offering his services as a director. :think

Passion had a built in fan base - Christians. Plus Gibson at the helm. Keep in mind also that it was not easy for him to get that film made.

Gibson was riding the wave of Passion, so he was able to make Apocalypto, which by the way, I really liked. I found Passion to be a completely overrated movie, as a film at least, although the realism of the torture was second to none. But it is basically a snuff film. Great suggestion for Gibson to direct a boxing film.

Please tell me it isn't so....

How many of you fellas watched Ali with Will 'F***ing' Smith. I point blank refused on the basis that noone could do Ali justice, and why would I want to watch choreographed fight scenes when I could watch the real thing. Anyway, I caved into peer pressure and was pissed off for 2 hours during the film and about 2 weeks after.

I mean, there is enough brilliant footage of Ali to make a full length doco - something like WWWK but covering his entire career.

For Duran, I am not sure enough footage exists, so perhaps they could meld real fight footage with other parts acted, by a suitably built unknown latino actor....

It'll be interesting observing the look on Cruises face right after SRL II when he's blasting out the giant steak, could even he be polished enough to pull it off? One can already see Hank and Red in the theatre, look, i told you i told you!

If Cruise is any kind of method actor, he'll chow down on laxatives before that fight scene.

With skilled makeup Tom Cruise can probably suggest the physical appearance of Roberto Duran. Over the years on some of the talk shows I have heard Cruise briefly do a variety of fairly credible accents and celebrity voice imitations so I think he can capture Duran's speech patterns and mannerisms.

I do not know if Duran spoke much English in public at various stages of his long boxing career, but for the English speaking audience Cruise will likely play Duran speaking English with a Spanish accent of some kind throughout much of the film. One does have to ask, however, if enough effort has been made to use an actor with some Latino ancestry to play Duran. Cruise has a lot of money and power in the movie business and I imagine that has a lot to do with him going after this role.

If Cruise is serious about the part he will get into good physical shape and learn enough about Duran's boxing style to do a respectable depiction of Roberto's fights, but of course Cruise is an actor and not a lifelong professional fighter, so no one expects him to be a Roberto Duran clone. :bbb
