The perfect Duran, IMO, is Jay Hernandez, who was young Carlito, in "Carlito's Way:Rise To Power". Look at him. He and young Duran could practically be twins.

Tom Cruise as Duran?..........Please........Don't make me laugh.....or puke......

If I'm not mistaken, I don't think Roberto could even speak fluent English for much of his career.........

Tom Cruise???????? Why not just cast Michael J. Fox as Duran. Let's just pussify Duran completely. Cruise isnt capable of convincing anyone in the role of Duran. Find a Latin actor for God's sake who can somewhat resemble Duran and give him a shot at it. It's like putting that Dumbo-eared Will Smith to play Ali. Why did they even make a movie on Ali anyway? No one can play him, and there's so many damned Ali documenteries and resources about him available can we give Ali a rest? I've been Ali'd to death by ESPN anyway.

BITE YOUR TONGUE! Ali played Ali, in "The Greatest" opposite Ernest Borgnine (as Angelo Dundee) and James Earl Jones (as Malcolm X) in 1977. Muhammad portrayed an infinitely more convincing Ali than Will Smith. As Smith actually got nominated for an Academy Award because of his pathetically shitty portrayal, then Ali should have won it for playing the same part far, far better, over thirty years ago.

Yes, but when Duran spoke, he frequently sounded as though he was breathing helium gas. An ample supply of the stuff will need to be on the set for any portrayal made of him.

No, no, no Duodenum!!!! I AGREE WITH YOU!!! A poor choice of words from me, of course ONLY Ali can play Ali, and no one else can even come close.

Don't worry, it's cool. (We all have lapses, but I didn't want you to overlook Mr. Ali's perfect acting job.)

I was just watching Carlito's Way and I've come to the conclusion that Al Pacino would've made a perfect Roberto Duran. It's obviously a lil too late for that however.

Is Charlie Manson still available? (Hey, if Frazier was the casting agent for this one, that's who he'd hire!)

Thanks Duodenum for filling us in on Duran's speaking style. I only saw a few brief Roberto Duran interviews and in each of them he spoke Spanish while using an English speaking translator.

When an actor tries to portray a real life fighter it presents more than a few unique challenges. Getting an actor's body to resemble a champion's physique and fighting style is no easy task. Some actors can probably learn to do a perfect imitation of Roberto Duran's voice but if the voice is less than agreeable to the movie going public it will be modified to sell tickets. If the actor has little or no facial resemblence to the fighter he plays the makeup experts can only go so far without making it look ridiculous. If that's the case the actor has to try to project an approximate interpretation, not an exact duplication.

In my opinion Robert De Niro did not really look like Jake La Motta in "The Raging Bull", but the physical appearance he did have combined with De Niro's acting skill achieved enough of an overall resemblence to deliver a believable performance in an excellent film. :hi:

La Motta trained De Niro to portray him, and apparently, they got along quite well. De Niro may not have really looked like Jake, be we can be very confident that De Niro nailed down La Motta's personna as well as it could have possibly been reproduced. For that film, De Niro's physique truly was a body by Jake. (De Niro also reportedly spent time with Vikki La Motta in preparation for that role.)

I think Gael Garcia Bernal would be a better choice, though I've never seen him play a character similar to Duran.

I think Freddy Rodriguez (of Harsh Times and Grindehouse) should play him. He looks similar and is around the same size
