Any caller who knew the least bit about boxing was made to sound like an expert. People were RIPPING De La Hoya; talking about how "he lost every big fight," the only reason he didn't get knocked out by Trinidad is because "he ran for his life," how he's "just a pretty boy who never like to get hit." Stuff like that. We don't even need to ask ourselves if Oscar hurt his legacy - he unquestionably did in the minds of all the fairweather and non-boxing fans that saw him get "brutally beaten" by a "tiny little fighter" like Manny Pacquiao. I'd go so far as to say that with these people; De La Hoya made himself look like an unbelievable joke. Alot of them think he was always a fraud now because of last Saturday. Disturbing because of the genuine sincerity people seemed to be expressing.
Interesting. I have beef with de la Hoya going all the way back to 1996, when he avoided Kostya Tszyu like the Bubonic Plague, and took on an ancient Julio Cesar Chavez instead, can anyone say "KARMA".......anyhow, I was a huge Trinidad fan when they met, had been since Trini destroyed Camacho and the Thin Man Blocker/Whitaker.... I didnt like the way Oscar ran in the final 4 rounds, but it did make for great conversation and arguments for over a decade. People have always said that I "hate" DLH but that isnt so, I just saw through some of the BS wins, like Charpentier, Carr, and Campas, and the Ghosts of Chavez and Camacho and called people out on the Sturm and Whitaker Robberies, as well as the Contraversial Decision in the Quartey Match. I gave Hoya full credit for his asswhippings of Vargas, and Mayo and his great fights with the Sugar, and even the Pretty Boy. Who I do hate, and who incurs my Wrath are moronic fans that dont follow the Sport, and turn on a fighter because he lost. Oscar lost to the 147 wt. limit and Father Time.
