What does that tell you about Canelo? He took risks, and will continue taking them.
Guess what, Canelo/Smith sold more PPV and gate than GGG/Jacobs.
Canelo was fighting an unknown fighter and it's safe to say Canelo was the one that sold almost all the PPV.
GGG/Jacobs was considered GGG's biggest highest profile fight and it bombed.
How do you even compare both fights?

 

PPV's aren't sold by a single fighter. They need NAMES. Jacobs isn't household, Golovkin is barely household.

Canelo has done 2.2m with Floyd, 800k with Cotto, and 250k with Smith.

Face it, Golovkin isn't selling PPV's by himself. Canelo can sell with a half decent name.

 

Pacman doing 500K would have been considered a massive FLOP!

 

Do you even get what the comparison was? You say this fight bombed, then what do you call barely 300K buys for the biggest draw in boxing?

I guarantee you the base offer will be MUCH lower. If Golovkin is getting $15 million and Canelo is projected to make much more, that means they're anticipating 1m+ PPV's. That's an extremely optimistic expectation.

This fight does 600-800k IMO, might even crack a mil. Golovkin isn't making $15m+PPV on a fight that does 600-800k.

Let's say it does 800k, optimistically, at $65HD (assuming it's all HD)

That's $52m.

Half goes to the networks.

That's $26m.

Golovkin gets his $15m.

That's $16m.

What's Canelo's guarantee? What's the split? They'd be splitting $500,000.00.

Be realistic, a $15m purse + upside is UNLIKELY. And with recent trends, networks not ponying up cash, numbers low, do you really think they're going to give Golovkin $15m?

See, that's the reason you're biased. You're not looking at the big picture, but if need to let me explain the events around that time.

• The FMJ/Pacquiao syndrome (the entire boxing sport has taken a hit on PPV)

• During the Canelo/Smith fight people where dissing Canelo for dropping the belt

Even after a lot of people stopped watching Canelo, he outsold GGG/Jacobs and Ward/Krusher both huge fights.

 

HBO should not have made this a PPV. The only way PPV's get big viewership totals is when
the matchup attracts casuals. GGG is completely unknown outside of boxing fans and has no
built in demographic fan base. I think HBO's management puts on these low end PPV's so they
have something to point to when they cut boxing out entirely.

Canyellow has a big fan base of Mexicans PLUS people who want to see him KO'd. Same goes
for Floyd. IMO only those two guys can provide the numbers for a successful PPV. Everyone else,
and that includes Andre "Big Head" Ward, should be fighting on cable shows but not PPV's.

The last PPV that I paid for was Floyd-Pac because I had a bunch of guys over for a poker game.
I bet I could do the same for Floyd-MacGregor because, let's be real here, it's going to be a circus
event. Otherwise I ain't paying for ANYONE else.

$15m WITHOUT PPV cut of a 1 MILLION PPV is 23% BEFORE network takes a cut. After networks get their cut that $15m is about 46%.

46% BEFORE a PPV cut is added. Do you truly think Golovkin is getting that?

You think your reasons for Canelo versus Smith not selling well...was because of those two items, but had NOTHING to do with the fact that Smith is a complete unknown?
