Really neat find Thistle. I don’t know if it’s the most classic boxer of them all but this was nice footage.
the point that can be taken from such footage is... that when Fighting was being 'legitimised' i.e the Broughton and then Queensbury Rules, they tried to take Fighting, Brawling, wrestling, cudgelling, gauging and scrapping into a form of 'Acceptable Respect", honour, dignity, they tried to Structure it, "Hands Up, Straight punching, No Dirty stuff, Defence and movement. In short, Fighters were learning a New Craft, an Art & Techniques that were at odds and came into contrast with basic instinctive Brute Fighting... the now Pugilists, took a couple or more decades for it to developed into the Stylish Athletic Skill we know & expect today as Boxing. these men it that film are clearly 'trying' to Fight Controlled and Honourably. like everything it was an evolution to eventually master.
This is true. We’ll cut em a bit of slack in so far as how much those formidable ‘staches weighed on their own.
Maybe it’s my eyes, but I didn’t see the left hook land - perhaps one of the earliest known examples of the “phantom” punch? Though I’m sure an ultra slow motion replay would reveal a lightning fast, perfectly timed, flush shot on the chin! That was NO phantom punch!
