Tom Sharkey ,the man who fought Corbett ,Fitzsimmons and twice went the difstance with Jeffries in close fights was asked his opinion as to who was the greatest Heavyweight of his times ,he replied "Jack Johnson, and I tell you that honestly ,because I hated the man"
I have heard this quote, and if it is accurate, it is telling, as I would expect him to have said Jeffries, given his own excellent performances against Jeff.
A source or a link here would be great, and please let's hope it isn't an author who wrote a love fest. Shareky said Johnson was great. He did not say he was the greatest. And speaking of the greatest, Johnson in his own auto bio said Jeffires was the greatest. I bet a shiny silver dollar that Sailor Tom agrees.
You seem to think that there is a clear cut answer to whether Jeffries or Johnson was greater. There are certain factors that make their careers inherantly imposible to compare. 1. The film of both of them is inconclusive. 2. One had a short and consistent career while the other had a long and less consistent career fought under less favourable circumstances. 3. Their styles are completely diferent. So how can you compare them directly?
As usual wrong again .Johnson rated himself as the greatest,I have Jacks auto biography on my lap as I write,Sharkey rated Johnson as THE GREATEST,live with it!
Are you sure. The Cyber boxing zone reports: Jeffries has been called the greatest heavyweight of all-time by numerous boxing people -- Jim Corbett, Jack Dempsey, Tommy Burns, Willie Ritchie, and Tom Sharkey to name five. Jack Johnson, the first black Heavyweight Champion and the only man to beat Jeffries, also called Jim the greatest heavyweight of all-time. >>It seems that both Sharkey and Johnson felt Jeffries was the greatest. Live with it.
Actually, everyone might be right. That's because these guys constatntly changed their opinions, often gave different opinions to different newspapers. Feelings and motivations changed over time. Tom Sharkey was one of the most full of b.s. fighters I've ever seen. This guy has zero credibility with me.
I know Sharkey disliked Johnson ,I recently read that when Johnson wa scuffling for dimes at the flea circus he would don the gloves with punters for a couple of bucks,Sharkey is supposed to have dropped in ,both men were not only over the hil but also halfway up the next one ,never the less Tom put on the gloves ,but instead of a gentle spar ,he really went at Johnson, who was quoted as saying "steady there Tom ,its only for fun" the story may be apocryphal but Id like to beleive Old Sharkey was still full of vinegar and "up for it"
