Has anyone suggested otherwise? Personally I think Sharkey goes the distance with Jeffries every time, and, gets wrecked by Fitz every time. Does this mean that Fitz is superior to Jeffries ? No. Which brings us to the inevitable question, what exactly is your point?
My first point, is that if Jeffries arm had not been injured, he would likley have stopped Sharkey late. My second point, is that it might not be good practice, to use this fight to inferr that fighters similar to Sharkey would have beaten Jeffries.
Two different issues. If you want to say that Jeffries-Sharkey II would have been close because Jeffries-Sharkey I was (presumably for stylistic reasons), that's fine. But you were pointing to Sharkey's injuries in J-S II as relevant. I don't see how they were, since he got them during the fight.
Jeffries, carrying an injured arm, broke two of Sharkey's ribs,Sharkey fighting half the fight with a broken knuckle ,still went the 25 rounds.
If Jeffries could not stop Sharkey when the Sailor had two broken ribs and a broken knuckle, he never stops him. Has anyone inferred that fighters with a similar style to Sharkey , beat Jeffries? In theory, a face first, come forward slugger like Sharkey ,should be meat and drink to a hefty punching bigger man imo.Foreman v Frazier? I should expect Jeffries to have more trouble with a fleet footed stylish boxer .Corbett 23rds?
So you're using the injuries not to show that Sharkey was somehow disadvantaged, but that nothing Jeffries could do would KO him? Yeah, I could buy that. Except that I doubt Sharkey with two broken ribs and a broken knuckle would survive a Jeffries with two hands. (Provided Jeffries was lucky enough to break Sharkey's ribs and knuckles exactly as he did in the actual fight).
The reason for the thread is obvious. WE all know they fought earlier . WE also know Jeffries was a relative novice against the more experienced sailor. The rematch pitted both men in their primes. Jeffries was clearly injured before the bout and likely would have won by a larger margin. By KO is pure speculation ...
Jeffries faced the very best version of Sharkey hurt. I think he stops him if his left shoulder / arm was healthy. Jeffries best weapon was his hook, and he went into this fight with it being tender, then re-injured it in the 2nd round when he floored Sharkey with a hook that sent him down on the back of his head. After that, Jeffries left was done being a factor for the fight.
Not exactly so. Jeffries landed many lefts late on in the fight, as the link I provided shows. No doubt Jeffries had had problems leading up to the fight, but as champion, what would have been his incentive to go into a defence unready? What are we to make of the fact that Sharkey could not see out 8 rds with Fitz, in two fights?
He had less than 10 recorded fights when he first meet SHarkey, yet he floored him and almost took him out. If Jeffries was healthy in the 1899 title fight, he KO's/TKO's Sharkey.
