Sharkey would be slung out ,as soon as he realised he could do nothing with Tucker, he would resort to his usual m. o. low punches, hitting after the bell , butting etc. If he behaved himself and kept his temper in check , then Tucker by wide decision or mid rounds tko ,Sharkey was a crude, face first, charge in slugger 5'8" and around 180lbs with a 70.5" reach, twice destroyed by super middleweight Fitzsimmons. Tucker was 6'5" 222lbs in his prime with an 82" reach an excellent boxer who had a decent dig.. Jeffries said Sharkey always gave him trouble because he was all over him, never giving him a chance to set himself.Film of their fight shows Jeffries waiting for Sharkey to charge and countering him when he's close. Tucker would not be there for those lumbering charges. Tucker has 5" in height on Jeffries , 5'5" in reach, around 15lbs in weight and real boxing ability. He would move and box off the back foot, pot shotting at will. Sharkey would get picked off before he ever got in range. A palpable mismatch.
I've never seen what Sharkey looked like in action. But yeah, its hard to imagine a man of his description beating the guy who survived both Tyson and Lewis while having that kind of size advantage as well.
Tucker would win. I was watching his fight with Lewis the other day. Tucker actually looked slightly bigger than Lewis.
Tucker had a lot of talent, but sometimes I think he lacked grit when faced vs an aggressive punching type, which makes the fight interesting. I'm going to fence sit here. 12 rounds and under, Tucker UD 15 rounds or more Sharkey SD
Johnson v Burns Walker v Schmeling Wilde v Herman Johnson v Ketchel Jeffries v FItzsimmons x2 Jeffries v Sharkey x2 Plus a couple of hundred more.
So far, all I see are premature stoppages. Grit wins the war; officiating shenanigans sometimes take the battles.
Premature stoppages:huh Officiating shenanigans certainly benefited Sharkey against Fitz who kod him with a legitimate body punch ,only to be robbed of the victory. Sharkey gets hammered in this fight.
A 5'8", 180 lbs turn of the century fighter vs a 6'5", 225 lbs modern heavyweight who survived Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis along with beating McCall and Douglas is a mismatch. I don't care if Sharkey was well accustomed to living without such luxuries as indoor plumbing and air conditioning. Nothing he's doing to tucker is hurting him and that's assuming he even lands with any regularity at all which is doubtful. Tucker will jab, hook and combo away at Sharkey while keeping him at bay and tying him up on the inside.. And even if Tom manages to turn this into a brawl, Tucker has about 50 lbs and nearly a foot of height in addition to a battle tested chin to fall back on.... You might as well give Sharkey a baseball bat to take into the ring with him because that's what he'll need, and even then it might not be enough.
I think that those picking Tucker, are pretty near the mark to be honest. Tucker was not just big, he was good as well. It would not be impossible for a 185lb fighter to beat him, but it would take a truly exceptional one to do it.
Schmeling gave an ultimatum that he would withdraw from the fight, if it wasn't stopped, because he didn't wan't to kill Walker. If his bluff had been called, Walker would have won!
