I like Bell in this one.
Bell mixed in much better company than Green.
The Green who butted Stracey to victory will hear the bell. The one who got koed by Jorgen Hansen wouldn't

Just how I see it. Bell was very unlucky to come along when the likes of Robinson and Gavilan were in their pomp.

Yeah so many sad stories of fighters from those times.

Winds me up thinking of these fighters being at the mercy of the mob and/or bent promoters.
And yet when Marciano managed to keep his earnings, even from his mate Joe Louis:) he's labelled tight fisted.

Going with Bell. Dave puts in a gutsy effort but loses by late ko.

I watched that fight with Hansen one Saturday I think it was, with my then girlfriends dad.
I was just saying how Green was going to finish him any second then..........d'oh.
His fight with Palomino was a grueller and it was even Stevens.
Green had just said to Palomino "you can't punch" when Green found out he could, double d'oh

That Palomino-Green bout was bloody good. Dave was always good to watch but if John H Stracey had been just a little sharper he'd have won their fight.

    I didn't give Green a chance against John H.
There was a photo of them in the Daily Mirror of them head to head.
Stracey looked dapper in a 70's style, Green looked like Cletus the slack jawed yokel's minder.
Green should have had a protector on his head.

    Yeah he seems genuine.
Like a lot of British greats he had a good left hand.
Someone slipped up thinking Palomino would be a routine defence

The memories flood back, myself and friends, plus about 30 other drinkers from the Green Man in Hoxton ( rough as hell then ) boarded a large minibus to travel to the fight, all the talk was how John ( local lad ) was about to redeem himself, and give the country bumpkin a well deserved beating, except a little lone voice at the back of the bus, that being yours truly, I cleared my throat, gave a rather loud cough, and declared to the throng ( Stracey backers to a man ) " guys Stracey could be in trouble tonight, Palomino showed the way with body punching, and Green is no mean body puncher himself " oh dear !! 95% of the assembled turned round and gave little ole me , the most baleful stare.
There was a discussion as to when to kick me of the bus, whilst moving, or at a standstill, I could feel the warm sweat trickling down my back, the ring leaders decided to spare me the ordeal, on the condition that I preach no more hairasey, unsurprisingly I was moot for the rest journey.
On arrival at the venue, we decided to imbibe ourselves with with a small cherry or two, whilst sipping the refreshment, who should walk by none other than Green himself, bigger in the flesh, broad of shoulder, purposeful of gait, striding along looking very determined and focused, out of the corner of my eye, I could see the Stracey backers, exchange looks , not too dissimilar to look Bonnie and Clyde exchanged , when they realised big trouble was in the making, at the final scene.
The ring leader approached, " Mike, we may have been a tad hasty, in declaring that Green had no chance, how long do you think John will last , we fancy a bet "
    Stay safe guys.

Green had flattened a lad I used to spar with and this lad was something like 8-2 when the young boy Green battered him early in his career..
He was never the same afterwards.
I remember Green beating Joey Singleton for the light welter title but didn't think he'd beat Stracey.
I remember Andy Smith retiring him after his last fight, it was a good call.
I watched him in a charity football match on TV, fighters vs somebody or other.
Brian Jacks was in the fighters team as well as the boxers.
boy Green and Conteh were fairly good, Maurice Hope was ******* awful.
