Burns from his title run with all his 1-2 trickery versus the pocket fighter Toney who beat Jirov. Put in a 22 foot ring with 12 rounds to sort things out, who do you take?
Toney, pretty easily. From what little I know of Burns I've seen nothing to suggest he could beat a master boxer like Toney. Burns wouldn't even have any advantages as far as I can tell.
Yeah, I'm going to need some reasoning for this. I've watched a bit of burns and I can't see anything he does really troubling james.
Toney is one of the smaller fighters that matches up well vs bigger men because he's has a pound for pound type of chin, Good defense, in-fighting ability, and can counter. In many ways James Toney is old school, minus some effort! In this fight, he would actually be the bigger man ( 190 pounds ) I'd pick Toney by decision. However, if the fight was 20 rounds, I think Burns could outwork him and take the decision. Some say history has been unkind to Burns. I say the opposite as he won a championship with 3-5 likely better fighters out there.
Burns is too quick, too mobile, and has too good of reflexes for Toney to deal with in my opinion. With Toneys style, Burns would have the advantage in range control. I think he would just outwork him throughout the whole fight. Toney could land a counter that really troubles Burns, but I honestly don't see it. I don't think Toney has the offensive repertoire to handle Tommy. His footwork will be too slow paced. He will wait for counter opportunities on the inside that won’t happen that frequently. Johnson had to use all the tenacity in the world to finish Burns, and that was a true HW elite legend. Toney can't force finishes like that. Bad matchup for James. A better matchup would be against someone that likes to fight on the inside or in the pocket. Not an in-n-out fast, powerful puncher. It'll be too dynamic for him. imo.
Dude, seriously. Johnson didn't break a sweat in beating Tommy to a pulp. He could have finished him anytime he pleased. Way to overstate the facts.
Show me Johnson in a more savage finishing mode in any other filmed fight of his. How silly of me to forget though. When you’re chasing your opponent around the ring, mauling him, trapping him, and tearing him apart non stop, and it’s filmed in black and white, it takes no effort. He should’ve uppercutted him 10 ft in the air. Then, finally something in black and white will actually look effective.
OK, now we are just going make up sh*t to fit some fantastical remolding of the old heroes. If these conversations have devolved into pure fiction, that is fine. People need pastime and distraction, but let's not confuse this with the facts. If I list 50 articles describing Johnson making "easy work" of Burns and having the upperhand from the start, that is not fair play, I suppose....
Look, just because you suffered the traumatic experience of realizing that your childhood idol Dempsey wasn't the colorful superhero from the Ring Magazine covers, but was in fact a fallible human, it doesn't mean that everything people say about these guys are fictional hyperbole. When you're capable of compartmentalizing the dregs of that PTSD experience, hopefully you can join the rest of us in having the ability to appreciate aspects of boxing from that time period without feeling like you're hyping the tooth fairy. Easily beating your opponent doesnt mean you weren't tenacious doing it. Ever heard of a fella named Michael Tyson? You think Toney has Jack Johnsons tenacity to take out Burns like that? Maybe he doesnt need to, and maybe Toney could stop Burns in his own unique way. But I don't see Burns getting caught in Toneys spider web. Too mobile, too fast, too alert, too aware.
