How does this fight go down? Both fighters were very short and stocky fighters. Although Tyson was taller, presumably with the better reach, he rarely jabbed and didnt really utilise that reach because he was so much more dominating and devastating at close range. Tommy's lack of reach was probably compensated by him being more mobile and better from range than Tyson was. Both had all time great chins, although Tyson's was certainly dented more often, with Burns only real dent coming against Johnson (discard the knockout in his last fight where he hadnt fought for 2 years and was in poor condition). Even in the Johnson, fight he showed he could take as much punishment as anyone and while he was well behind in points and being thumped, he was technically not counted our or stopped since it was the police who halted the proceedings not him or his corner. Arguably his chin was far more proven than Tysons. On film, colour and film speed means that Tyson looks a lot better but burns does also look surprisingly good, given that he was never really considered as good as his record suggests he was. Tyson has lightning combinations, but Burns combats this with what i have heard described as the old levitiation trick with his footwork. Apparently his feet moved so fast that he was able to actually levitate in the air for several minutes at a time. And apparently this is proved by film. What does everybody think, could Tommy Burns cause Tyson any trouble?
Nah, to quote Tony Galento "Mike woulda moidered da bum!" Seriously though, Mike would flattened him within the first round methinks, maybe the second if Tommy somehow survives the first round, but I very much doubt that he would.
I give this fight 25 seconds the most. It would be along the lines of this: [yt]cojYlRAfiIY[/yt] Absolutely brutal KO.
Tyson KO1 is possible against anyone. He did it against spinks. While he had to box a few rounds, when he finally caught an old HOlmes (all time great chin) he virtually knocked him out with a few well placed combinations, and virtually stopped him as soon as he landed clean and had him in trouble. He could possibly do it to anyone. But, Tommy's chin is definitely top shelf, and as proven as tysons is. No one else ever kOd him in one, so how can you assume that Tyson does? What if he doesnt and he cant land the big hit (Even prime Tyson didnt KO everybody). Johnson thrashed Burns and may have held him up (that was his wear down style and allowed due to rules of the time), but when he knocked burns down, Burns still had to climb from the canvas before the count of 10. He showed great heart and chin. At worst, his effort against Johnson showed as good a chin as Tyson showed against Lewis. I dont see how anyone can argue any differently.
It's not a question of wether or not tyson would win but how early, like the first or second minute of the "fight".
Assume for a moment that Burns would box, rather than slug. He was rather good at that, from all accounts, but would be facing a fighter who probably exceeded him in terms of speed and power.Nevertheless, I think Burns can get out of the first if he stays back and refuses to engage. This wouldn't last that long, so Burns would have to try a different tactic to survive. But, since Buster Mathis did a decent job of smothering Tyson's power for a couple of rounds, it's not out of the question that Burns replicates the feat, and lasts till say, the fourth before getting clocked.
Burns lack of reach? Burns reach was 74in,Tyson's 71in,this isn't about reach,Burns had a longer reach than Johnson, but never won a round. Tommy fenced with his left at long range looking to glide in and land his fast right hand over the top,he was an acknowledged master of in fighting, but Tyson ,who was best at mid range would be too strong ,too heavy ,too fast and hit too hard for the Canadian.Stylistically this is a nightmare matchup for Tommy,Tyson's quick hands get him out of there early possibly inside two rounds.
This thread does seem a bit sadistic towards poor old Burns. Could he give Tyson any trouble? Potentialy yes. For the first time in his career Tyson would be fighting sombody 4'' shorter than himself. Also as mcvea has noted, Burns was a first rate infighter with good handspeed while Tyson was esentialy a mid range fighter. Tyson would have to deal with a number of problems that he was not acustomed to and it is hard to say how this would play out. Ultimately however there are only so many aces in the pack and Burns would run out of them.
Most of boxing fans do not understand that height plays a large role in out fighting. Burns was 5'7", the shortest man ever to hold the heavyweight title. Johnson was about 6'1". Burns had a 6" disadvantage, which was magnified even more because he fought low. A fighterÂ’s maximum striking distance is a straight line from his shoulder. When you punch up, you lose range. Try it for yourself. Straight out your arm even with your shoulder so you first barely touches the wall, then raise it up 7". You will see it no longer touches the wall. Burns say he lacked the raged to hit Johnson. On film, I would agree with him. Listed reach and listed height determine striking distance, not pure reach.
I brought Burns reach into the equation because Boilermaker made a big deal out of it.I boxed and am only 5 8 1/2in ,my reach is 72in,so I know how it works.Marciano had a 69in reach ,he still managed to connect with tall guys ,AND HE FOUGHT IN A CROUCH,so his 5 10 1/2 height was minimized even more, the disadvantages work both ways.Burns would not have beaten Johnson if he had Liston's reach, as I explained Burns worked best inside he did not stay off looking to score ,but moved his way in he had fast feet and handspeed ,plus good power. He could not last long with Tyson imo.
